Finally got around to cleaning up and getting the barnyard find from last summer back on the road. i decided not to fool around with new paint since it was in good enough shape to just throw on touch up (testor's modelpaint). it's a bike to ride on sloppy days and not worry about pristineness! yeah! my favorite trick for surface rust is just aluminum foil, wet and rolled up in a ball and rub away. since i don't know the bike's history and it looked to have been poorly kept, i opted to replace the fork, headset and front cable hanger with the authentic yamaha replacement tange sloping crown fork i picked up from vtchuck last year. also swapped out the stem for what i think is a very close match in shape, 100mm origin 8 and my preffered 44cm bars with shallow drop. it's proven to be a great fit with the same front end as my kiwi single speed build. i upgraded to pro specs with the crane/titlist combo and it came with the micro adjust seat post. i steel wooled the spokes and rims to get off the oxidation layer and they came up ok, ditto the crankset. the real issue for me is the hookless birmilux rims and what tire and pressure to use. i thought i was good at 80lbs pressure with the panaracer pasellas but i got a pinch flat and tore the side wall on the second ride. seems they can't handle the underinflation. on order now are the kenda k34 white wall tires that run at 70lbs with a wire bead. i saw that tire on a previous white and red sport rebuild a few months ago and it looked awesome. have since added a nice red bottle cage. spent sunday riding it up and down the beach path and it put quite the big smile on my face . lucky for me, the tire blew only 2 miles from home. i expect this one will get lots of ride time! Forgot to mention the bottom bracket bearings. I pulled off the seal hoping to avoid knocking out the axle and i was happy to see the bearing in excellent shape. Shot some grease in and just replaced the rubber seals. Good to go. The bike kinda of morphed into a Pro clincher with GP colors. Is it a Pro or GP or is it a GP Pro???
