Today was our local gran fondo www.tehachapigranfondo.com Instead of the 100 mile gran fondo ride (100 miles (161 km) with 7249 feet (2209 meters) of climbing) I wisely opted to ride the little fun fondo; which was much like my daily ride times 1.5 (18 miles (29 km) with only 907 feet (276 meters) of climbing). That left me time to wander about the festival and talk with some folks. My ride was a 1978 Motobecane Team Champion with Mavic SSC components; it was a bit of a conversation piece. Perhaps next year I will take the Viscount? This reminded me that I need a small camera to take along on rides (my cell phone doesn't cut it); any ideas? All the Best Jim

Great shot of the Motobecane! How was the ride? What was the temperature? Re: the digital camera.I personally ditched any kind of digital camera quite a while back in favour of an iPhone - figuring on the old adage that the best camera is the one you have with you at the time. And the quality is pretty high on most of these new smart phones - you also get the flexibility of aperture and exposure settings on the newer iPhones. And as I get older, I really don't want to carry too many items for fear of forgetting where I put them. (for that reason, I even have a wallet that sits connected to the back of the iPhone) If I want to take 'real' picture then I have a few Olympus SLR OM series - which is pretty antiquated I know, but part of the fun. Just realised that I've not been much help here, recommending something you didn't want!

Temperatures, that is a challenge for some; just what does one do with unneeded leg warmers and a jacket in the middle of a ride. It was a nice fall day (I know, it is not yet fall) 38F (3C) in the morning at the start, 86F (30C)in the afternoon; We have large daily temperature variations in the dry thin mountain air. The ride was pleasant for me. I live about halfway through the century route and on the way home I passed many a struggling rider. Flat landers tend to underestimate how much energy climbs take out of you.
The picture of the Moto was made at a small lake near my house. I have a Kayak on a bike trailer to use on the lake (nice combo).
As for using a phone. I have no need for (or interest in) a fancy cell phone; I just use one for emergency calls. I guess it is a generational thing.
As for real cameras, I still have an Olympus OM1 and a Nikon FM2 but haven't used them (or film) in years. For most things I use a Nikon P100 Coolpix which is like a small SLR. In the shop I have an old Samsung digital camera which is clunky and low quality. I looked at a Nikon S6900, it seemed too big (mainly caused by a big moveable screen) for my purposes.
Still Searching Jim

I have a Sony DSC TX10, though I see that newer models are now available. You switch it on by just sliding the front cover down below the lens, and you're good to go. Supposedly waterproof to 5m and shockproof, it's the size of a pack of playing cards (or cigarettes if anyone remembers them) and takes good photos and HD video if required. The touch screen controls take a bit of getting used to if you need to change settings, but that's the price of the very compact size. it has served me well for a couple of years, and fits in pretty much any regular pocket.

I purchased a Sony DSC-W830. Nice size, lens by Zeiss (who made many microscopes I have used). I try it tomorrow, yippee!

Jim, that looks like a nice little camera. I hope you find it as useful as I do my Sony, and look forward to seeing your pictures. I see they do a rubber cover for £10 (like an iPhone cover) to protect it from knocks, scratches and dust. Did you get one of those to guard against fumbles and back pocket biscuit debris?

Good idea, I just ordered one. I take it you have English biscuits in your pockets, not the unsweetened bread lumps we call biscuits over here; we tend to like them with gravy; which would leave a real mess in a pocket! :-) I used to work with a Brit who had tea and biscuits each day, we joined him with coffee and called his biscuits, cookies. He would look amused and jokingly say that this fueled his opinion of as being primitive heathens. We of course, never tried to convince him otherwise.

'Two great nations divided by a common language?' (George Bernard Shaw, probably)
What you call biscuits in the USA sound like the things we call dumplings over here in GB, usually put into stews or casseroles to bulk them up and yes, what you call cookies we call biscuits (mostly).
But Jaffa Cakes - cake or biscuit? (This debate may need its own thread).

We have the same problem with Moon Pies!
Our biscuits are sort of baked dumplings (see pic).

But surely, the only biscuits for us are: viscountmintcream by RMT@261, on Flickr Currently ranking a lowly 23rd (just below cycling favourite fig rolls) in the "best biscuits to have with a cup of tea" internet poll in honour of Ireland's National Biscuit day (May 29th)! Could the forum members vote Viscount biscuits 3 more places up this prestigious ranking to knock Wagon Wheels out of the top 20?

As a California boy I have never seen, much less tasted, a Jaffa Cake; for the sake of intellectual curiosity, I ordered a package. With shipping, about a buck a cake. I will report on the taste test.

I will report on the taste test. Jim Jim- I have a long history with the Jaffa Cake. They are surprisingly healthy with no hydrogenated fat and very little fat at all.(fairly high sugar though - but ideal bike snacks in my opinion) The reason I know this was that I worked at a Premier League (Pro) Football Club and the players used to eat them. So I bought vast quantities for the children that came down to the learning centre that we had at the club. They loved the idea of eating the snack that the players had. I think I was their biggest none retail buyer of the 2 pack for a while. Needless to say that whenever I got a bit peckish, I would consume a pack or two. This went on for 7 or 8 years and by the end of the project I was totally sick of them. The other interesting thing about them is that they aren't really a 'cake', but in most peoples eyes would be called a biscuit, but their makers McVities went to court to have them recognised as a cake- this was for tax purposes. I think they won the ruling.

Gotcha, Jaffa Cakes! (See here for the HMRC official verdict on the cake vs. biscuit taxation debate.) Now we need to push past the Penguins for a top 15 place just behind Jammie Dodgers. I'd suggest that we try to form a Breakaway, but that might be one biscuit-related reference too many. I do quite like Jaffa cakes, though I couldn't eat a whole packet at once. Also feeling a bit guilty at having passed the delicious Tunnock's Tea Cakes after drafting their chocolate, mallow and biscuit loveliness for so long.
One commentator is viewing the biscuit poll as an indicator of the state of the health of Ireland's economy. Perhaps we can gift them a boost to national pride by putting Viscount biscuits in there with the Custard Creams and Digestives. There has to be a DFR4 sponsorship deal here somewhere.
