I hate water bottle band clamps so I bought some of these. Hope they work as nice as they look. DMR Hinged Clamp

They look a better solution than the old steel strap type.
I’m undecided which type to fit on the Aerospace Pro, considered a handlebar bottle cage, the saddle type, then the quick release that Brian posted up, so these are another option. Thanks for posting these up Jim.

Jim, please let us know how these turn out. I looked at something like this but I think the price was ridiculous, like $9 each, and ended up going with the chunky plastic, which gets the job done but is, well, chunky. For $6/pair I think I would go with your clamps if they are good. Mine are more easily portable among bikes, which was a selling point for me all things considered.

I don't care for them; a waste of money. I bought the 28.6 version and the ID of the mount and the OD of the down tube are a poor match making an oval not a circle when installed. They also interfere with the shift cables. They are too large for road handle bars, may fit certain seat posts. They do have a decent fit on 28.0 French tubing; I will try them on an old Peugeot. SEE SUBSEQUENT POST!

Disappointing. I can see how the clamp would interfere with the shift cables, which is also a problem with my chunky plastic cages. I have tried drilling the frame and using aluminum rivnuts. Unfortunately they don't stand off the frame enough for some bottle cages, not to mention that drilling holes in the frame freehand is just as error prone as it sounds.
I would like to investigate this whole topic of clamps, etc. for adding accessories. I am working on a circa 1970 Dawes Galaxy that I would like to turn into a touring bike. It has exactly zero brazed-on bosses and only one M5 threaded hole in each front and rear dropout, I guess for mudguards.
Coated P-clamps and hose clamps might hold some promise if I can get them to not look like P-clamps and hose clamps.
Thanks for the followup.

This link discusses some solutions; I don't like any of them. Adding braze on water bottle bosses seems the very best solution. I think hand drilling the holes while working inside the frame triangle to be a recipe for disaster. Perhaps a jig would be needed to place them correctly. Once drilled, brazing is fairly easy but burns the paint. I can't help but wonder if the bosses could be attached (with or without holes) with JB Weld? It works on a Vitus 979 frame.
Still Searching Jim

Thanks for the update Jim. That’s this option off the table then.

Oops, but good news, I got them to work. I installed them on my PX10 project (28.0 French tubing) and they were a perfect fit, and with little cable rub. I noticed that the clamp is far more compliant than I first thought. I drug out an old 3 speed frame (28.6 tubing) and clamped them down with a more force than I was willing to try on the Viscount; yes they fit. I plan to stretch them a bit on the old 3 speed frame before installing them on the Viscount. The photos tell the tale.

That’s a stunning Peugeot!
Can see what you mean regarding the gear cables. Is mounting them on the seat tube an option?

That’s a stunning Peugeot! Can see what you mean regarding the gear cables. Is mounting them on the seat tube an option? I think the cables will be fine; barely touch and only on one side. The 1970 Peugeot PX10 is supposed to be white with black lugs; I prefer the red. Hurts the value a bit, Peugeot purists gag, I smile.

Nice Peugeot! I like the red much better than white.
Those clamps show some promise. Nothing beats a braze-on but sometimes you just don't want to ruin the paint or the chrome. Pop rivets are ok, but set a bit too flat. Cannondale used a bunch of them in their early days. Only problem was they used 10-32 threaded ones, then when owners or mechanics tried to install cages using metric screws the rivets broke loose to a free spinning mode and were a nightmare to remove. I thought about stainless steel pop rivets for water bottle mounts on my chrome pseudo-Supa Viscount, since the real Supas had w.b. braze-ons located on the downtube. Best, John "wheelson"

I installed the water bottle mounts on my black Viscount. They worked out fine. The shifter cables pass between the bolt and frame without touching.

Hi Jim, How works those clamps? They hold really? I’m not sure: hinge clamp vs rivnuts? Which one would the best solution? Many thanks in advance Viktor

They work very well; easy to install and hold better than band clamps.

Viktor, these are the cages I have been using. They look a bit clumsy but are cheap and strong.

Hey Brian, thanks for the photo. May I ask, which tire is shown on this Blue Lightning? I am in a searching after a really beautiful vintage-look tire with tan sidewall. Many thanks in advance. Viktor

Hey Brian, thanks for the photo. May I ask, which tire is shown on this Blue Lightning? I am in a searching after a really beautiful vintage-look tire with tan sidewall. Many thanks in advance. Viktor Panaracer Pasela, with the yellow label.
There is a newer version, Panaracer Pasela Pro-tite, with a blue label. They cost more. They look identical except for the label. They are supposed to be more puncture resistant but my experience says they are no better. I get about 3000 miles before they get too thin and vulnerable to punctures. They are fairly light, about 300g.
About halfway through this post are some close-up photos.
