Is the bike is fairly rare in inventing terms in that they seemed to have got it right quite early on, and all further developments are minor tweaks to the original plan or have been cosmetic?

When you think about it, the porthole chainring is just the bike-world's biggest bit of drillium. b

A lot of empty space on an old Rudge chainring.

From a turn of the century (20th not 21st) bike: Here's hoping you haven't quite left us yet. That's a very pretty piece of steel, and it looks as though the crank arms are tubular, fitting through a hole, perhaps with adjustable length? I'd really like to know where that came from, Chuck from Vermont. Best regards in any case, Frank

Love that chain ring. Saw a few quite remarkable steel ones.

Excelsior bicycle on Minneapolis Craig's list. Estimate is this is a '20s or '10s bike. minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/bik/5389808391.html (what is odd is sometimes the links work, it's like a dice throw) No front wheel but a lot there for about $550. I know, I use to ride 3-speeds all the time and someone was selling a bunch of really old 3 speeds, a lot of them out of Liverpool and one had to pick them up but they were in good shape. Reminiscent of that, I did once go to some sort of "bike" junk yard, lots of frames, lots of rust. This one above looks pretty good.
