Some of you might remember my on-going project to make a Viscount mountain bike - a sort of ‘what if’ exercise. There are some pictures here. I'm building up a late cro-moly frame - an ex-Corsair Wayfarer model. I’d like to fit 26” (559mm) wheels and I wonder if anyone has a suitable fork with canti bosses, which they’d like to part with for not much money + pp? Should have square shoulders - preferably lugged - as unicrown (curved-shoulder) forks didn’t come in until later in the eighties (I think). The idea is that the bike would be appropriate for 1982/3 and I will be fitting mainly 1st gen Deore parts. I haven't measured the steerer yet (duh!), but the frame is probably 23.5" (60cm), so that's a guide. Thanks. John

Very interesting! It's a bit like a missing branch on the tree of evolution (when they find a human shaped skull in the desert, many years earlier than it was previously thought humans existed)
I'll have a look in the shed this weekend to see if I have a fork that might be close.

John, Best I can do if you're looking for a 1" steerer tube: Untitled by RMT@261, on Flickr It's a unicrown steel construction, or possibly cast iron . I can provide the steerer tube length if it's of any interest at all. Rob.

Sorry, I forgot to look in the shed at weekend. Let me know if Rob's isn't suitable and I will check asap Hi. What I really had in mind was a fork like this or this. Unfortunately for me, they are in the US and the postage on top of the prices puts them out of my budget. I'll probably go for one like this, which is an ugly (IMHO) and probably incorrect-for-period unicrown fork but is amazingly good value ( the supplier currently one of my favourite shops on eBay for bike bits and pieces). At least until I can find a 26" lugged fork with brake bosses. Or I might use a (very) long drop calliper brake. Thanks Rob and S8 for your interest.

Working BikesJohn, I haven't been down to Working Bikes in a few weeks, so I need to get back to doing that. Keep us up on your success or lack thereof, and I'll rummage through a pile of forks next time I'm there, and if I find something take pics and set it aside. It will only be $5 to maybe $25 US, if that's low enough with shipping to keep you in budget. Duties should be quite low - I'll put value at $5. Let me know if that ends up too much. While I'm at it - Michael, do you still need that freewheel? Or did you go with Sunrace? Anything from Working Bikes would be used, so maybe not worth the risk even at $3 - $5? Frank

Don't rule out a unicorn fork. I recall unicorn forks on BMX bikes in the 1970s. They were scaled up for Marin County klunkers in the late 70s and then later for MTBs (when they came along). I have attached a photo of Alan Bonds Klunker from his website www.clunkers.net. It has a Cook Brothers unicorn fork which was added in 1979. Most agree that Klunker bikes, are where Mountain Bikes originated. Jim

If you can find it, I highly recommend the film Klunkerz. It's a documentary about the origins and history of the mountain bike.
