I have two Viscount spindles, both only allow a standard M8 crank bolt to go in about two turns. I will check an SAE 5/16 by 24 (after another 30 mile trip to a hardware store) which seems close, but somehow I doubt it to be correct. Viscount being British, could it be British Standard Whitworth (BSW), or British Standard Fine (BSF) or British Standard Cycle (BSC)? British standard of any kind is hard to find on this side of the pond. The threads appear to be in good condition and I am reluctant to "chase them" or crank the bolt down hard without knowing what they really are.
Thanks Jim

I had the same quandary a few years back. If memory serves me correctly (99% sure), the bolts were BSF. Here's a stateside link where I bought my bolts. I wish I could put my hands on the receipt, but you know how that goes. britishfasteners.com

BSF, I knew it had to be! Thanks for the info; I just ordered some that should work.

One time, I broke the bolt on the left side of a bicycle (it was broken on a pedal stroke not by overtightening it) so I figured, don't tighten it up so much and another time, the left crank arm loosened it up and I found out I did not tighten it up enough. I read once someone say he tightens it by hand but now, I think one must go a bit farther than just doing that. So, the bolts admittedly can be a hassle.
So, I figure the best way is to largely tighten it up by hand or wrench and then, maybe one quarter hard turn.

I still enjoy reading Sheldon Brown, somewhere on this forum, I read about selling a left crank arm which is often the one that comes loose:
I found this interesting, everyone wants a perfect match but often, people aren't going to note if your left crank arm doesn't match. I also broke a left crank arm once.

My AS Pro is 5/16" x 22 TPI. Other options are: 5/16" x 26 TPI or M8 x 1.0
I bought a set of stainless steel bolts of this size and use them to tighten down the crank arms on the spindle.
Remove the SS bolts and replace with the OE chromed bolts.

I tried 5/16 x 22 BSF, they are fine in my old non-tapered BB spindle, but a no go (just like M8 x 1.0 and SAE 5/16 24) in the tapered spindle. I will order a couple of BSC 5/16 x 26 and see what happens.
No Joy for Jim

I tried BSC (5/16 x 26); worst fit of all. I can only see which fits best and chase the threads with a tap. It always seems to be the simple things that hinder a project.
