Seems my Crane derailleur on my red white GP is lacking tension on the spring where the bolt attaches to the frame and is forever in a slack position. Has anyone attempted replacing that spring and any source for parts like that known? It shifts a bit choppier than my good one on the Pro. Does the Titlist use the same spring? May have to switch to a Titlist spare or go hunting for a new Crane.

My guess, Michael, is that yes, it's the same spring in both derailleurs - they look identical to me, except for the name change. Also, is there a chance that it's just "unsprung," and needs to be re-installed with the tension pre-loaded. I haven't messed with that in a long while, but seem to remember that situation cropping up. Good luck.

Frank, that was my first guess, too. Just had the same on a customer's bike recently. Put it back in place and all was fine. Hope it's the solution for you, Michael. Fingers crossed.

Thanks Frank and Stella. I'll sit down one of these nights and have a go at it. Just finished losing a bid on ebay for a NOS Crane that was ridiculously cheap at $1.29 when I got in but ended at $28 with shipping. A very good deal for someone.

Ah, what a bummer! Good luck. I hope it's just the spring coming loose. Easy fix.

Ok, I got the beast apart and found the problem is the tip that bends perpendicular to the coil spring that engages the outside part of the body was broken. If I'm lucky, my LBS will have one in the old parts bin. Such a tiny weak link on a nice clean derailleur My nice clean Titlist is ready to go if all else fails. I hate to break that one apart too. Stella, please PM me if you find such spring in your shop's old parts bin.

I'll definitely think of you, but can tell you safely that our shop doesn't have such a bin. Unfortunately. :-(

Ya gotta love the local, nondescript mom and pop bike store that you would never go to for "real" bike stuff. The little shop that could came through again! It's run with one floor guy and one old school mechanic who squirrels away all kinds of small parts. It took him all of 5 minutes to come up with the right spring to repair my Crane! Searching online and calling "vintage" bike shops got me nowhere. A few years ago he saved a bad thread on a Viscount BB axle for me where my big all everything bike shop said it couldn't be done! Kudos to Valley Stream Bike Shop

Trust me, Frank, I've got my eye on a few people I'd have no hesitation to employ if I were in the position. :-)

I'll tell you all about my vision on the rally. It's clear in my head, I can already feel the atmosphere. It's unique and I'm sure hasn't been done yet. All I need is a little more err. spine and money.

But let me start out first. lol Hey, I'll "apprentice" in your shop, Stella, before returning here to start the franchise. Michael, how on earth did that happen? I wouldn't worry, the Cubs, I finally figured out, can NEVER win the series. They can come close as many times as possible, but they can't ever win it. Why? It would RUIN the brand, and they'd be just another lousy ball club. I firmly believe the owners think this way, and will find a way to prevent the Cubs from ever winning it all, in a way that makes it look innocent. enough cynicism. Have a Happy Independence Day, everyone. Brits, be glad you got rid of us. Celebrate! Frank PS Rode a century today.

I'd expect everyone to work for me for a while before franchising. Yes, yes. :-) Not only to make the kind of shop and approach is clear, but also to get a chance to get to know everyone in person.

I read this thread, kudos to the shops that have been in business for many years, I can not recall the part now but I did find something at a shop that has been around since the late 1950s. Shops can do you favors, shops can overcharge too, even this LBS but I've learned to be forgiving hoping it all comes out equally.
Building the winter rider up, I ran into a bit of a spring issue but fingers crossed, it will fair okay. It's probably led me to get this job done instead of becoming obsessed with technical issues and procrastinating. Just get it so it can be ridden.

Hey! Sorry, I guess this is a bit late but... The spring in my Titalist broke at the bend (were it fits into the slot). I bent a smooth curve into the top of the spring and it's been working fine. You could change the tension that way, mayby.
