That's very cool. Blackstone Cycles and Working Bikes do the refurb and sell donations thing here. There's another shop with open hours for would be mechanics. Your folks have a nicer website and seem a bit more organized.

That's what we do at our shops. People can join up as members and have access to our bike wash and the workshop, including the tools, for £20 a year and they can come at any time they want, 7 days a week. The problem I find (experience shows) that 'knowing what you do' is interpreted wildly. Most people overestimate their abilities, and underestimate the time working on your bike can take. This is not me being snobby or mean, but if you say you know what you're doing and then ask the mechanics every five minutes about this and that it's just disturbing the business. In general, I love this idea; after all that's how I started my way into the industry when I started fixing Shawn in one of our shops. :-) Oh, and an even better thing: Hackney Bike Workshop hold open workshops every two weeks, where you can pop up with your bike and they will actively help you with advice. They got work stands and tools and will tell you what you need to order if anything needs replacing, and then they will help you fix your bike. The aim is getting you confident in doing it yourself, under supervision. The best part: it's all for free, you pay only for your parts as you have to get them yourself. Went there once before I became a mechanic and found it super helpful in a relaxed atmosphere.

That last bit is similar to what they do at Chicago's West Town Bikes. They hold sessions that concentrate on particular components - headsets, for example, and anyone can come put their bike in a rack and get to work. They also have an assortment of open shop hours, $10 / hour, and various youth and other projects. West Town BikesAnd sort of off topic, but I like the name and the food is good. Hackney's on Harms

I'm all for getting people to fix their own bikes. :-)

So was my dad! That's probably why I have so much cycle related stuff. Last divorce sited the number of bikes as a reason. No sense of proportion some people! Cheers, Pete. PS N+1 bike = N-1 wife?

New York has an outfit called Recycle-A-Bike with open house for volunteers to tinker and rebuild old bikes one night a week. Too bad work doesn't yet allow such an indulgence but it's on the list for the future.
Pete, the new math has always been quite confusing but your formula does make a lot of sense to me!
Cheers, Michael

I'm looking at this equation with a little bit of fear and foreboding....can I please request that at DFR3, you don't ask my wife how many bikes I have and if she likes the new one.

Oh,does that mean the Viking is going to cause problems? Cheers, Pete. Audible groan....ah, I hadn't even taken that one into account, thanks for reminding me. The Grand Sport was my main concern..that looks like a bike and looks like it cost money. Maybe if the wheels are off the Viking and I can give someone the frame on the day, it won't seem like a bike but just some bits. If anyone wants the frame then please let them have it. If anyone is interested , the Viking is half way down this thread. I want the bits off it but the frame is up for grabs. It's a Viking Hosteller.. viscountandlambert.boards.net/thread/499/bargain-small-steelieI think it's from the 60's, some very nice lug work - the reason I don't want it is that it's a 24" frame (too big for me) and no space...

Actually Jem,I think it's from the '50's,so would be good for any amount of old bike rallies. Except a Raleigh rally, oviously. Cheers, Pete.
