I'll have a look in my "legendery boxes of bits",can't promise though. Is it a 2 circlip or 3 that you need? Where are you? Cheers, Pete.

Pete I think it is a 3 groove that I need. Will be running a 1st generation Dura-Ace chainset.
I am in North Herts
Thanks Steve

Hi Steve, the one I have as a spare(somewhere!) is a 2 groove spindle. I gave up on the original bottom bracket as my chain line was dreadful. I've used a threadless bottom bracket since with great effect. Several other posters on here use them as well. They're cheaper than that spindle went for,are available in several lengths to suit your desired chainset. The only thing is,you may have to grind the excess tube from the seat tube and down tube, where it protrudes into the bottom bracket shell. Highly recommended. Cheers, Pete.

Pete I have thought about using one of the threadless BB's but am a bit of a stickler for originality and was thinking that if I have the BB shell faced and angled for a threadless there would be no going back to standard. Having said that the frame is not one of the matt chrome superbikes that ran Dura-Ace so perhaps I should just proceed on the easier route of threadless on this build.
Thanks for looking for me.

Steve Steve, There are threadless BB's that don't need the shell to be faced and angled, such as the Prestine ones, which are quite cheap. I have one on my old, gold Lambert - put in as a temporary measure, but not yet got around to swapping it out. Of course, for authenticity, this Lambert should have the square taperless cranks and spindle. An option if you can't get an original spindle is to get a newer one designed for cartridge bearings. I use a White one on one of my Viscounts and Klein and Phil Wood have also produced suitable spindles - i.e. 17mm diameter where the bearings sit and 119 - 122mm long. There are even titanium versions. These will come without circlip grooves, but those are of questionable benefit anyway. My White spindle came with alloy collars that fit outboard of the bearings, fixed with grub screws, to locate the spindle side-to-side; but others have used Locktite alone. If you can get one of these spindles, there is then no problem with tubes jutting into the shell. Of the ones I have seen or heard about, the tapers have matched Viscount cranks well enough.

When I did my threadless bb,it took me approx 10 minutes with a Dremel grinder. No need to alter the outer edges of the bb shell. It was a Prestine I fitted, about £16,no worries now about 40 odd year cheese axles shearing. If I find it,I'm more than happy to donate it at DFR3. Cheers, Pete.

Titanium spindleDidn't someone do business with this gentlemen recently, and with success? Had the shoulder milled back to the correct spec, etc? of course it's about 35 GBP, plus shipping, maybe some tax, but it's a drop-in replacement, significantly lighter, and should last forever. Frank

Have to admit,I've never broken a crank spindle. I've never broken a chain either. I loaned my Aerospace Pro to a neighbour about 16 years ago,he broke the chain! I took 2 links out, rode it at DFR1,still got the same chain,as it has had since the bike was given to me in 1991(ish). Memory isn't what it was. That bike is still running its original spindle, but 1992 bearings. A bit of a clean, and lube before it goes away seems to work.I could pump the tyres up and do DFR3 on it,but I'll use my Franken sport,it's a lot better to ride. The brakes work,in the modern sense! Cheers, Pete.
