I'm new to this forum and looking for the Middlemores saddle that would have come with my Aerospace Pro; they were stamped 'Viscount'. I recently acquired a bike and would like to get it back to as original spec as possible. Any leads? Attachments:

Hi there Slowroller, welcome to the forum.
A small batch of 'new old stock' of these came up a few years back ( the seller was in Scotland) and I bought one for about £40 I think. To cut a long story short, it wasn't a saddle you could do many miles on , but it did look good.
I would say you perhaps have more chance looking for a beat up old Viscount bike with one on and buying the whole bike , rather than source just the saddle. You might even ;break even' and find the bike for £40-£50 and therefore be laughing,
Just trawl the classifieds/ebay/Gumtree/CL etc and zoom in on the saddle.
Good luck

I may be in a minority, but I actually found one from 54roadie, a forum member, already broken in that is quite comfortable! The more pre-broken in the better.
Cheers, Michael

The Viscount branded saddles are very nice looking - who wouldn't want one? However Viscount also used Middlemore branded saddles (presumably later on) and these are easier to come by as they were fitted to other bikes. For what it's worth, I use a Viscount saddle regularly and don't find it uncomfortable.

Actually I bought TWO Aerospaces last weekend. The more complete one had a Planet Bike saddle, and the less complete one had an Avocet saddle; the seller of that bike thought it was the original. Viscount saddles are totally separate from the bike company (I think they are still in business), and Middlemores made the 'Viscount'-stamped saddles for the company; I have seen photos of them with the Middlemores tag on the back and Viscount stamp on each side skirt. Do you think Viscount put Avocet saddles on their bikes later in production?

Hello slowroller, and welcome to the forum. Did I not just meet you over at Steel is Real? You're in New Mexico, correct?
Anyway, welcome here, and best regards,
Frank

Hey Frank Yes- Steel is Real is how I found out about THIS forum. Actually I'm in the Detroit area. Last week I went to Cincinnati to retrieve a Viscount Aerospace Pro that I had purchased on eBay in March. Last Monday, riding with a guy I had just met at Slow Roll (Detroit's weekly downtown bike ride), I found out about another one he was willing to sell. As it turned out, it had much of the stuff the Cincinnati bike needed- now I have TWO Aerospace Pros!
So.
Now the bikes are both here at home, and I have started disassembling them to clean parts and assess what is needed. I think they are both Pros, but I'm not sure. They are both pearlescent silver: one has black paneling on the head and seat tubes, the other has a beautiful metallic deep blue. The black one has adjuster-style rear dropouts (the screws are missing). The blue one has conventional- style rear dropouts; the blue one is the one with the tubular rims, which I think may be original to the bike.
Both frames are scratched and chipped, typical for this age of bike, but I haven't washed, wet-sanded and polished either one out yet, which is the true indicator of their cosmetic condition (I have been pretty fortunate at bringing frames that look like goners back to life keeping the original paint with just some touch-ups and new decals. Out of the two, I am extremely fortunate to have a set of bars that are straight with the original cloth tape in good condition, a good set of brake lever hoods as well as an original set of pedal end caps.
I would like to build one good Pro out of the best of both, but there will be enough "leftovers" that I am considering a second Viscount project, so I am just trying to get a handle on who has components and knowledge, and what direction I want to take next.
Both bikes have the 'porthole'-style chainweels, but on the blue bike the second ring is missing and the stem is broken, and I am thinking about building one of the frames with an internal-gear rear hub (using the original single large chainwheel), sandblasting and urethane clear-coating the frame, adding a different saddle (maybe a Brooks Professional), crème Schwalbe tires, Velo Orange stainless-steel-jacket cable shrouds and Soma Lauterwasser bars to get a vintage track bike look.
From what I am learning however, keeping both frames original may be a better long-term strategy, given the relative rarity of these. We have a big bike show coming up Sunday, so I plan to nose around and see what turns up.

Oh, Bendo, be CAREFUL over at Steel is Real. it will suck you in mercilessly, for hours. Trust me!
Slowroller, you'll see info on these bikes on a different thread or two, I believe, but yes, they sound like Pros. I have a V branded stem, and matching, but nameless bars available. See my thread in the trade/wants/etc. folder as you move your projects along, as it's a reasonable assortment of Viscount stuff.
And please keep us all up on your bikes. Good luck, Frank

Thanks. Wondered why nothing came up from a search. But I'm not on FB, so it looks like I just saved squillions of hours of mindless browsing. (Maybe I'll just toddle off to Imgur for a quick look at some cats...) b

Oh no, not cats, please not cats. But yes, squillions of hours, not just browsing, you'd find yourself commenting, giving advice, helping with restoration info, and generally admiring the billion or so steel builds that show up every day. RESIST!
