Some pictures below of my kit of parts to build up a 600ax frame. Actually a bit of a hybrid since the brakes, brake levers and stem are Dura Ace ax parts. Wheels have 600ax hubs and Mavic Monthelery tub (sew-up) rims. Saddle is a suede Iscaselle Tornado, bought from the same person as the frame - so it might be the original saddle. Head set isn't Shimano , it's an alloy Stronglight one with needle bearings. I liked it because it looks a bit 'aero', although not correct for the 600ax. Bars are SR Sakae Modolo Anatomic pattern. Nice bars with a groove for the brake cables, but probably later than 1981 - again not correct for a 600ax. Busaste passed them on to me at DFR1. Perhaps I'll bring the finished bike to DFR3 and use its superior aerodynamics to sail past everyone ...

Well you've got a great base foe a build there John.Especially with the Stronglight head set. If the bike was built of gas pipe, you'd still overtake me. Looking forward to more pics. Cheers, Pete.

My goodness, it reminds me of one of those "some assembly required" toys I used to try to put together!

Bike now assembled and ridden round the block. Nice ride and no big problems. Only annoyance is chain slip in top gear. New chain and the cogs aren't much used. IG chain for up to 8 speed. Perhaps I should use a 6 speed one? There does not seem to be an enormous amount of wrap in top but the 600ax semi-indexing system seems to stop the dérailleur moving any further forward. I could try shortening the chain although the tension seems adequate. Any advice gratefully received!
For weight weenies, the all-up weight (without brake lever hoods, bar tape or a bottle cage was 10.0kg (22lbs dead) on the bathroom scales. Not bad for a gruppo not intended to be especially light. For comparison, my Viscount 400 frame fitted with a full first gen Dura Ace group set + Cinelli R1 stem & bars, Selle Italia Ti saddle, hoods, tape and cage is about 10.2kg (22lbs 7oz)

Trouble shooting re chain slipping: in my experience a new chain with a used freewheel/cassette can be tricky. Could it be that the smallest cog was used more than all the other cogs? That means it got most of the wear and the new chain will 'slip' on it. If not, then it could be the limit screw or a bent derailleur hanger. Just throwing ideas in here, I know you're well capable of getting the bikes up and running.

I've had the same problem with chain slip in top; a) a low use mint seemingly straight and damage free Shimano freewheel which I had to bin because every chain I tried slipped in top gear. Cured by a new freewheel. b) New 5 speed freewheel, new 8 speed chain, new chainrings yet still a slip in top gear. Cured by fitting a 5/6 speed chain. Great bike build by the way and 22lbs is LIGHT! Tested the cogs by swapping with the six speed UG cassette from my 600ex, which had never given any problem shifting with the 600ex (Arabesque) RD. But had the same problem. Yesterday I checked my bits box and found I have several screw- on UG cogs, 12, 13, and 14 teeth, all used to greater or lesser extents. Fitted a 12 tooth and tried it today and it works!
