A few pictures from today's ride on the 5-speed Sport . . .
From the heat of the original Death Fork Rally to the chill of the high Pennines in winter.
This is where I got off and pushed, but only for about 300 yards/metres . . .
Passport Control at the Yorkshire/Lancashire border.
Yorkshire ends/Lancashire begins at the bend in the road - I forgot my passport so had to sneak past the structure on the right whilst lunch was being taken . . .
. . . though it was worth it for the views!
There's nothing particularly special about this bike.
Frame is of Viscount hi-tensile tubing, according to the sticker, Shimano hubs with van Schothorst (now Rigida) chrome rims, Simplex rear derailleur with band-on Shimano shifter, Brooks Vitesse 200 saddle (needs special padding on one's posterior!), unbranded bars and stem, and the chainset is as found on the Metro (as well as many other models in the range). The bottom bracket is a cup and cone assembly by SR and has cottered cranks. Sports mudguards are Bluemels Olympic.
The handlebar tape is still the original from the factory
The bike was given to me by a fellow train commuter who wanted to free up some space in his cellar.
Not bad for nowt, as they say in this part of the world!
Whisper: I did manage to sneak back into Yorkshire!
The 'passport control' structure is one of the ventilation shafts in Summit Tunnel, and the road is closed due to ground shrinkage/damage/contortion which are the after effects of the famous Summit Tunnel fire of 30 years ago, which occurred some 200 feet (60 metres) directly below this point, when a petrol tanker train derailed and caught fire in the tunnel. Temperatures reached some 1500C - so hot that the bricks in the tunnel lining melted and ran down the walls, just like wax runs down a candle.
