Was it new,and how much was it then? I've only ever had one new bike,a Peugeot, I bought in 1989. Always seemed better bikes to be had used. Hope you enjoyed it as a lad. Cheers, Pete.

Was this the start for your masochistic cycling tendencies? Cheers, Pete.

Pete, I like to think of it as building strength and character but yeh, I guess I've got masochistic tendencies. It helps in dealing with all the c**p life throws at you. Cheers, Michael

Tee shirts, I've got a wardrobe full of them! You just have to try to maintain a sense of proportion. In my case it's more a sense of the ridiculous! Cheers, Pete.

I cannot believe this...this has just sent me in to a flash back of huge proportions. Before that Raleigh (above) , I had a little bike with big fat white (ish ) tyres , from the age of about 5 years old. It was well used and my uncle found it for me, and did it up a bit. I rode it till I was about 9 or 10 and became massively too big for it, and then got the new Raleigh above (which for reference was about £65 in 1976) In the year or so before that, I bought 2 x cans of spray paint and did a 2 tone spray job on the little bike (one colour lightly on top of the other, and I recall it had glitter in it , or I might just have sprinkled glitter on while it was drying - I think I just wiped the frame down with a cloth and sprayed the tyres too...I have never been one for lengthy prep) The bike dear reader? Well, it was a Pavemaster, which was made by Trusty. This is the exact colour and model, as posted by Sprockit oldbike.wordpress.com/1959-trusty-pavemaster-childrens-cycle/Quite bizarre!

Been riding 'Trusty' cycles longer than you thought then, Jem? I can't believe it. Just the name 'Pavemaster' is bringing back memories. I am mulling it around my mouth like a vintage wine!! If you've seen Citizen Kane, then this is a bit of a 'Rosebud' moment for me. I went everywhere on this bike, I was almost never off it. I wore through about 3 or 4 pairs of tyres in it's life time. I built ramps and thought I was Evil Knievel. I rode about 20 miles when I was 8 , with my uncle and we went on a dual carriage way and got stopped by the police. I vividly remember the traffic cop advising us to not use that road as we would be 'jam butties'. (with hindsight, he was right, but we ignored him) Here it is- just rummaged through my photo box. Just a shame i don't have any profile shots of it.

Yes,you were a bit big for it! I had to ride it like the BMX'ers did some years later...stood up all the time, I never felt the seat on my bum from 1973-6 Update - Mine wasn't identical to the link - It had this kind of sweeping cross bar www.re-buy-cycle.co.uk/uploads/461/L/0.jpg

I see you liked your rear racks from an early age. What a forum. We have the original hipster, first mountain bike builder, and now the original BMXer! I don't think any other forum could match that. Cheers, Pete.
