Rebuilding my old Viscount GP question:
I'm at the point of remounting both cranks onto the axle.
Of course, with the (damn) tapered axle, both cranks slip on only halfway.
Before I screw this up, how do I go about seating the cranks back onto the axle properly? I really don't want to take a hammer to them.
Is it as easy as tightening the bolt, to push them on? Will I run the risk of striping threads inside the axle, or bolt?
OR, do you use a massive padded table clamp, or is there a specific tool?

Hey,
Are you fitting the porthole chain set? If it's the original cranks you had beforehand, then it's just a matter of tightening the bolts. No hammer or other rough methods required. I don't think you'd risk stripping the threads if you're using the same bolts or equivalent ones (with the same thread, which would most likely be 5/16).
Hope it all goes fine. :-)

Yes, it is my original porthole version. However, the frame/bottom bracket/axle is from another bike. Albeit, the same model. I guess I can start slow, if it begins to get difficult, I can remove the bolt and try pressing them on the rest of the way. What a hassle for something that should be a straight forward operation.

Sounds like it. Good luck. It may be that the axle is JIS and not ISO. I think the porthole cranks went onto ISO.
