Used bar end shifters still go for £40 on ebay. Why so expensive?

Interesting point. The cheapest around at the moment (Microshift) are not much below Dura Ace in price. I have seen some reasonable bargains in second hand stuff, esp if it's friction. But Pete's nailed it I think, they're still used for time-trial and tri bikes.

Check out Sturmey Archer barcons. They start at about £15.50 each on eBay for ones for SA three speed hubs - perhaps the indexing could be removed? Friction and nine speed indexed versions are available but are about £35. Surely those aren't that much more complicated than the three speed ones? Probably reflects their possible use on TT / tri set-ups as others have noted. Or see this pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=231293997152Need to find out what p&p would be. I have noticed that bar end shifters on eBay tend to make less in the US than in Europe, but postage has to be considered. Try Velosaloon www.velosaloon.com/shop/components.html?cat=89SunTour barcons for €50. (And a set of first gen Dura Ace - FD, RD and DT shifters for €80 - seems quite good. ) + p&p of course, but reasonable IME.
