You knew this was coming from yours truly (and on a much better place than the CTC board). If you've ever thought about or wondered if you could compete in a triathlon on your Viscount, the answer is YES! This along with the usual bicycle upkeep chores can become your winter project to train for. The place to start is a sprint distance race. It usually is about 1/4-1/2 mile swim, 5-15 mile bike and a 2-3 mile run. Since you can all ride the bike and even walk, you're 2/3 of the way there! I guess the season starts now "down under" for Bendo, but for the rest, it might be cool to show up at a race with your Viscount next summer. It's an amazing and exciting atmosphere and exciting to finish. Did my first one as part of a team back in '88 on my Gran Touring. The team thing is a great place to start if you don't yet bike and run. At my race this past Sunday my tri buddies were intrigued about the lugless frame on such an old bike and it allowed me to tell the Viscount story. If anyone has an questions or is looking for advise I am more than happy to help. Now it's time to enjoy the off season.

Hey Triitout, I'm really impressed that you gave it a go and raced your Pro. I've never thought of entering a triathlon, but the Bolshie part of me would love to stir up all those guys who think that downtube shifters are 'suicide shifters'! I think you and Whippet have really started something. b

Hey Bendo, you are in the land of triathlon so just pick one with calm warm waters, a flat run, and a disproportionately long bike leg to make your statement. You'll really will get a major kick when you blow by the "posers" on the Viscount. I think our girl StellaLdn would be a natural to get out there next summer with her enthusiasm for Viscounts and new experiences. What do you think Stella?? Free tips available upon request for those taking the plunge.

It's the start of a new season and maybe with the new members, SOMEONE will do a triathlon on a Viscount. Did a supersprint pool triathlon this Sunday and somewhat indirectly, I cost myself a crucial 15 seconds by pulling on my red Viscount jersey (same one you've seen Stella wearing) over a long sleeve thermal top (it's still cold) in part to "include" Viscount in my race even though I used my carbon Trek, (please don't cringe and hate me!!). I got 2nd in my admittedly small 60-64 age group 14 seconds behind the winner. I would like to think my Viscount Pro training bike made it possible for me to have an excellent bike split on the Trek (20/249) and even though the jersey cost me time, it also inspired me and powered me to ride my best. It would have also helped immensely if I didn't have an unanticipated panic attack in the middle of the swim when I got tangled up in true rugby fashion at one of the lane turns.

I do apologise, it's the first time I came across this thread. You and Whippet are absolutely admirable. Serious! If you're suggesting I should enter a race where running is involved, I'm afraid that's not going to happen. I love swimming and cycling, but I'm not fast, so I'd probably come last. Went on a 'hilly' ride yesterday and was close to tears. Me, racing or competing? Don't think it's going to happen. I'm just really unfit, I think. Too fat, for starters, and yes 10kg makes the difference. Maybe in a year's time. :-)
