I now know why there is a spacer between the nuts .

There are two spacers between them on my Peugeot. Cheers, Pete.

I have been using a very large pair of pipe grips wrapped in bits of inner tube and an equally large adjustable spanner but with all the road vibration it keeps working loose . So I thought sod it. ( there may also have been a glass of wine involved in the decision process )

How much were they? Perhaps I should invest in a pair too? Bought a new (used) car today so feeling a bit gung-ho about spending money.

From my experience, it pays off to have the right tools. You can always improvise, but oftentimes it's only just that: improvising. The correct tool will make it so much easier without the danger of damaging. How much did you pay for them?
Oh, I see, 28. That's a VERY good price. Professional tools cost an arm and a leg. My most favourite headset spanner is discontinued and you get that for 40 on eBay or other outlets (if not sold out).

Whilst it's true ordinary head set spanners fit, less potential for damaging the nuts if you use a pair of suitably sized adjustable spanners. Cheers, Pete.

Foss, if you used that as a template and replicated them in acrylic do you think they'd work? Or are they just a bit too precise/tricky to copy?
You can see where I'm going with this?

Copyright/patent infringement? Cheers, Pete. I'd take the risk of the Shimano lawyers catching up with me for a cut price tool.

I don't think they would work in acrylic , these are only 4 mm thick which is the size of the middle spacer . I think it would be easier for me to post them out if anyone wants to borrow the Finland spanners .

He who dies with the most tools wins. :-)

There's a large likelihood that it may be me (keep in mind I'm tool obsessed and have at least four years to collect) and, despite being a tomboy, I'd refuse to be called a 'he'. :-P

Inspired by Foss, but being mean, I splashed out on a pair of standard headset spanners (wrenches): 32/34mm and 36/40mm at the other end. £9.99 the pair, delivered. pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=400721331254They have enabled me to tighten my 600ex headset, using the 32mm ends, but I was very careful that I didn't do any damage and I'll have to see if I've tightened it enough. John, those are good headset spanners and at a very good price, too.
