What would be the smallest number of teeth on smallest front ring that I could reasonably use if my biggest front ring is 52 teeth?
(using a Titlist fd and Crane rear - if that makes any difference to it?)
Thanks in advance

According to Velobase a 14 tooth difference would be the most a Titlist could handle so a 38T. You would also need to factor in the BCD of your cranks most older doubles will be 144mm meaning that you couldn't go lower than a 42. 130mm BCD allows you to go down to 38.

Ah right, thanks Stoatie. So if I search Velobase for my other FD's and see if they will give anything less?
It's my 'Pro porthole chain-set with a 52 and 42, but I was hoping to get a bit lower on the smallest.

On my Maxy chain set, fitted to my Pro,I ditched the 52 outer, replaced it with the 42 inner, and fitted a 36 as an inner.Lowest possible with that chainset. As you're such a powerful young pedaller,I reckon you could get away with using 52,36.It will work if you have a medium cage rear mech,or,you only use the inner on the 3 lower gears. Give it a go and report back. Cheers, Pete.

They use the same rings as the Specialites T.A Cyclotouriste cranks I believe, so in the theory the worlds your oyster with regards to ring size derailleur permitting. The deerhead FD that I've got on mine goes from a 28 upto 50 but it has got a 38 inbetween them. You could always convert the porthole cranks to a triple if necessary.

I had an outer for a TA chainset,50 teeth I think,at DFR2,perhaps you didn't see it Jem.I've got one or two old Strnonglight/TA chainrings kicking about.More 86 BCD,now they're useful,especially for tandemists. Cheers, Pete.
