I was giving this a clean and grease tonight and thought I'd take a couple of photos. First off, something about this set up reminds me of those youngsters who have huge ear lobe inserts (my son tells me they are called gauges). They certainly look like date codes, but they are generally not on open display - they tend to be on a relatively hidden part of the component. Also, in the Shimano system, year code D corresponds to 1979 but 600ax pedals were not, according to Velobase, produced until 1982. I'll try to check my pair of 600ax pedals tomorrow.

I've had a look at one of the 600ax pedals I have. The date code is on the inside of the steel plate at the back. There are no letters stamped on the alloy body where the toe piece bolts on. The date code is FA, which translates to January 1981. This is comparable with the codes on the crank and chain rings - EK and two ELs (November and December 1980) - but even these suggest that ax components were made before the official / Velobase launch date. So perhaps 1979 is OK? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

If it helps: Kona did the same. They had two types of splutter/spash paint. One of built in 1988, released in 1989 and the other one built in 1989 and released in 1990. So it's very likely that your pedals were made in 79 and released in 1980.
