He's got 21 other bikes currently for sale on Gumtree! I wonder if the taxman knows? Cheers, Pete.

Oh. Hi there, I just bought this bike and was perusing the internet to see if I could find out any info on a Viscount Nevada, like year it was made etc etc, couldn't find much out except it could be dangerous to ride, and I probably paid a little too much for it, but what drew me too it was it was in exceptional condition, and was a great colour! Anyway, I must be in the right place (or could you point me in the right direction) for any info on the bike?
Many thanks

Hey, Nicknak.
Congratulations on the bike. Any Viscount is wonderful and we all consider our bikes priceless anyway. So welcome to the family. :-)
Sorry I can't give you information on the Nevada, perhaps Cusqueno knows more?

Hi Nicknak. Great that you have found our forum. I believe the Nevada (the Gumtree ad has now been removed) is one of Viscount's mid-range bikes from the mid to late 1970s, which were clearly made for the US market. Other models were Sebring, Colorado, Tulsa, Indy 500 (!). Some of these had frames made in the UK, others in Taiwan. One thing that none of them had was the 'death fork'. This was only fitted to the higher spec bikes with the Aerospace name, and then only in from the early (as Lambert bikes) to late-ish 1970s (by which time modifications to its design had made it reliable). So you need have no fear over using your bike. If you need additional reassurance, test the forks with a magnet. You will find, I am sure, that the magnet sticks - meaning that the forks are steel. The so-called death forks are made of aluminium alloy and are non-magnetic.
Perhaps you could post some photographs of the bike? As you say, and as I recall, the condition is very good. Maybe you could come to the Viscount rally on 28 June?
With regard to the price, this is a very subjective thing. Viscounts are still quite cheap compared with many other vintage bikes, even common types like Raleigh and Peugeot. I always compare with modern bikes, where the quality of components supplied on bikes for a similar price is generally much lower (although obviously those on the Viscount will be older!)

Nicknak, as it says above, no danger whatsoever. In fact even the version of the fork that had an issue, less than 0.2% ever actually failed and most of the stories on the internet about catastrophic failures while riding do not seem to be backed up with any evidence. The 'death fork' is unfortunately one of the first things that a casual observer finds when researching Viscounts on the web and in particular web forum.
That Nevada truly is in great shape and I personally love the colour.
In terms of the price you paid - I think by September you will probably have had your moneys worth and be very grateful you grabbed it while it was there.
If I remember correctly, it had a decent set of tyres and is ridable straight away? So, you might pick one up £50 cheaper but then spend £50 on tyres etc. Your paint job is immaculate.
Ride it with pride, you are now part of a small but elite cycling club!
Vive le Viscount!

(Newbie to all this forum stuff!) Hi Nicknak - I think the 'Photographs of you bike' is the section most fitting. Can't wait to see them!

Yes, Nick. I'd love to see 'em, too. Otherwise you can always sign up to Blogger or Tumblr or whatever else is available to upload your pictures there. You can only upload three pictures per post on here, which can be a tad annoying if you have like ten or more to show a bike from ALL angles.
