I was inspired by Stoatie's beautiful Stronglight triple (above) to ask forumites, what are your favourite cranksets? What should a good crankset have? Why are they often such things of beauty? For me they are, even more than the rear derailleur, the main errogenous zone of a classic bicycle. Pics are mandatory. What I love about the one above is the drillium gone mad on not two but three rings; the tiny BCD of the spider, the fluted cranks and the classic silver finish. b

Here's my only triple. Not quite as fancy. Kind of dour in fact. No-nonsense and slightly scary: the overly-massive 52T big ring implies someone with Olympian thigh muscles. I mean, who needs that for touring? The even spacing of the rings at 52, 42, 32 teeth has a kind of wham-bam-thank you ma'am look. Classic 50.4 BCD shared with our own Viscount/Lambert cranks. b

OK so I'm not planning on monopolising this thread but... came across this pic from a while ago when I had a Viscount chainwheel on my 650B rando: just to prove that the BCD is indeed the same for TA, Viscount/Lambert and Stronglight. BTW that RD you see there makes a good case for overwhelming the sex appeal of the crankset with it's own je ne sais quoi. b

Hands down, the port hole one. But I also saw some really lovely old steel Phoenix ones. Nice!

There is something about it's unusual design that gives the Lambert porthole great appeal.
But , that Stronglight triple in the first post really is a beautiful piece of work.
I will possibly go out to the sheds later and take a few pics. I was brought up on SR Sugino - and I think it's a bit like beer...you like and get used to what you drank in your formative years regardless of objective taste (if that makes any sense?)

It does. I never object to the taste of beer! Unless it's badly kept of course. Have to admit a liking for a touch of drillium, Stronglight are my usual chainset of choice with maybe older Campag,in silver alloy obviously.Great looking and classy. Cheers, Pete.

I forgot to say that the Sugino Triple in the first picture has quite a charm, too. So does the Sugino Maxy.
