Dumb question but still. The shine of the metal from which the famous 'porthole' chainwheel is made looks more like steel to me than aluminium. Only way to confirm is to remove it from the bike and hold it in my hands, but I can't be bothered doing that just to answer this minor question.
So, brains trust, wot's it made from?

There are no dumb questions I've been told, but I've never heard of an aluminum chain wheel so I'd put my $ on steel but it is Viscount engineering so…...

The ones I've had have been alloy.Easy to check yours with a magnet. If it sticks it's steel. If it doesn't it's alloy. Viscount did use steel chainsets on lesser models,Tulsa etc. Cheers, Pete.

Oh. A magnet. Of course. *slaps forehead* Why didn't I think of that... *goes outside to check*...
...*moments pass*...
Yep, it's aluminium. Or aluminum if you prefer. Magnet definitely falls off. Thanks Pete! b

Oh dear, looks like that collection of assorted parts, rubbish to some ingnorant folk,is in danger of transmuting into a small thermo-nuclear device! Just of out to find some old carbon frames to use as moderators! The only use for them! Cheers, Pete.

Mine's alloy, by the way. Tested today. Will make it shine tomorrow, by means of mirror polishing.
