I'm rebuilding my Viscount , when I removed the Crank Axle I marked the drive side with tape , but looking at it when I came to reassemble the side I'd marked was slightly shorter from the circlip groove to the end than the other side. I'm assuming the longer side is the drive side and it had been reassembled wrongly in the past? The longer section has 2 grooves in it (LHS of picture) and the shorter only one

It could have been been flipped deliberately to alter the chain line. If you flip it back, the chain line will be further out. With a multi-speed freewheel, this is not necessarily a bad thing, just different. I have found, for some of my recent single speed and three-speed projects, that it is often better to flip the spindle to move the chain line closer to the middle of the bike.
