I agree, it is an interesting article. I expect my experience with an e-bike is much like Jim’s. I used to commute by “conventional” bike to the shop by way of an 11 mile round trip on the rail trail. After disc surgery and prostate cancer radiation treatment, my bike commuting for 2021 and 2022 was near zero. This year the shop owner graciously gave me a screaming deal on a kit takeoff which we setup on a old Kona flat bar 700c bike. The results are great - not only can I get back up the steep hills from the trail to home but I find I’m getting stronger to the point that I’m riding my “conventional” bikes for non-commuting ventures. All the “sins” mentioned in the article I’ve seen committed. Inexperienced riders are a big concern, but perhaps I’m too critical having been a bike rider for 70 of my 75 years. I don’t know where all this is going, but e-bikes have become a massive chunk of our business. Best, John “wheelson”

The article reflects some of my concerns. Most eBikes I see are used for putting around by folks who would normally not ride a bicycle. They are great for RV camping being used as easy to haul transportation. In cities they are great for commuting. These usually are boosted bicycles and reflect the true intent of having an eBike.
My eBike is setup as a legal class 2. It is powered by a 750 Watt Bafang (actually about 736 Watts) and one old man.
Cheers Jim

Jim, I remember photos of your ebike conversion, a very clean look, indeed. Unfortunately, mine has a more “industrial” look. Since it’s only used for commuting to work, and only 25 percent of the trip electrified at best, I don’t feel too bad. I view it as a physical therapy necessity. My real pleasure is in riding my Viscounts, Schwinn’s, and my Austro Daimler. I hope those days aren’t gone. Best, John “wheelson”

Wiring bundled into front bag and battery underneath the rear Bag and Panniers. Stealthy isn't it?
Cheers Jim

Jim - that conversion is ,for me, the best e-bike I've ever seen. Great work. It keeps the classic look. I'm all in favour of that.
