Wiggle currently have Continental Gator Hardshell 27” x 1-1/4” tyres on sale for only £6.99. (The other sizes are priced nearer £40.) I use these tyres myself and I’m very satisfied with them. I find that there are not many good quality tyres still available in that size.

On the subject of tires, I just bought a nice used wheelset (Campy hubs Mavic rims) that came with a set of CST Super HPs in 700-23. The HPs appeared to be new but were hard as a rock, more like plastic than rubber. I had the biggest tire (tyre) fight of my life getting them off. They had a very thick bead and a very heavy tube. This prevented them from compressing so I had to resort to some thin tipped steel pry bars in order to pry them loose. I usually don't need tools to swap a tire; much less my nasty steel pry bars. I installed a nice set of Continental Grand Prix Classics with nice thin tubes; no tools required. By the way, at 240 grams the Continental Grand Prix Classics were half the weight. Naturally, I do not recommend CST HP tires.

I bought some folding Continentals when they were relatively cheap earlier this year but have found it a battle to fit them. I have bought some of those plier-shaped plastic tyre lever things (now on my third pair having broken two) to help, which they do. A bit.

I've also seen reviews saying that these tyres are hard to fit, but I can honestly say that I've never had any trouble. Maybe some sizes are worse than others. I recently had to rebuild my back wheel, and getting the Hardshell tyre off and on was a doddle. I have no experience of the folding tyres.

I had a problem mounting some Continentals a few years ago. Eventually I figured out a technique that works quite well with tight tires. First get the tube and tire on the rim with both beads straddling outside the rim, which is almost always easy. Fully deflate the tube. Working from the valve, get one bead seated by pushing it into the rim's center well and pulling up on both sides of the tire as you go. Keep pushing the bead into the well and pulling up. The first side will be fairly easy. Repeat for the other side. Keep pushing both beads into the center well and pulling up away from the valve as you go. It is surprising how much slack this creates for the final few inches. Finally pull the beads out of the well and get the tire as evenly seated as possible before inflating.
Apologies if this is all common knowledge. It was a breakthrough for me!

This video demonstrates how I mount tires. He squeezes a pair of Gatorskins (which are notorious) on a tough rim. In my old age my fingers are not as strong as they once were. I have found a pair of Nitrile dipped gloves help greatly; they help me peel the tire onto the rim. Also, remember to end at the valve stem.

I prefer narrower tyres, I like 28mm ones (1 1/8" I suppose), but sometimmes use 25mm or I even have a couple of 19mm. But I'll try these 32mm ones. I recall Sheldon Brown having something to say about tyre (tire) measurements, to the effect that there are Lies, damned lies and manufacturers' quoted tire widths. So perhaps they won't be much different to 28mm ones?

I think I mount tires the same way shown in the video, but with less success. Perhaps I should pay more attention to ensuring the bead goes right down into the centre of the rim.

The thickness of the rim strip has a surprisingly large effect on ease of tire mounting. I have one set of wheels with Mavic rims that were almost impossible until I replaced the cloth strips with thin plastic. Tight fitting tires on old 27” rims with little or no hook bead is not always a bad thing, however. Best, John “wheelson”

And make sure it's narrow enough to fit down into the rim's channel. Is it difficult to find narrow rim tape now? I recently bought some from my LBS and the owner seemed a bit surprised that I wanted 10mm. And you have reminded me that I should have added some tape to my Wiggle order. Duh! I have had some exciting blow-outs with old tyres on non-hooked rims. They make a very loud bang, but fortunately there isn't usually any debris flying about to injure anyone. So I don't like non-hooked rims, no matter how period-correct they are.

10mm is hard to find; saw some on eBay out of France. 13mm is much more common; Zefel 13mm and 18mm cloth is what I keep on hand. In my college days every penny counted. In those wonderful times (they were indeed!) I used electrical tape as rim tape. Electrical tape is 19mm wide about the same as the common 18mm width used on many bike rims. If I needed thinner, I would apply the tape and then trim the excess (inside the bead) with an Exacto knife.

Fearing I may not be able to buy (in the future) 10mm rim tape for my very narrow rims, I bought a 10 roll box on eBay. Perhaps a similar deal on British eBay?
