Rather than wreck Stella's lovely, positive-themed thread with a negative reply, I thought I would share my slightly worrying story in a separate one.
This is like the evil corollary of Stella's benign example of Viscount-awareness. I was told of an immaculate Pro for sale in a bike shop by a good bikefriend. I went to see it and got chatting to the owner. This place specialises in second-hand bikes, but particularly nice ones, what you might even call 'vintage'. I was on my 650B rando at the time unfortunately. The owner showed me a beautiful black and grey Pro, weirdly just like the one I bought, although this was a week before I bought mine.
It was almost as mint as mine, apart from the original Viscount saddle which was well used; maybe a later addition? But it had some stickers on the frame, one in particular, that marked this as a bike I had seen for sale in NSW on eBay about a month ago (perhaps someone still has it in their watch list? If so, please take a screenshot and post it!) Vague memory that it went for something pretty dear like $350. The owner of the shop was suddenly cagey about where and when he got it, perhaps coz he had sussed I might remember what it went for.
I asked him how much he was selling it for.
He said $1000.00.
A little bit of me died inside...

Terrible! It makes one sad, doesn't it? It's a bit like the Moultons, some models sell up to £1500 pounds. They're bicycles, for crying out loud: restore them, look after them, ride them!

That's it! You bloody legend! Thanks Jem. Went for even less than I remember and less than mine! b
