Anyone know what brand saddle came on the 1978 gran sports? Hi Sam I have no idea which saddle came on your 1978 Gran Sports; but if anyone knows, this is the place to find them.
Cheers Jim

Anyone know what brand saddle came on the 1978 gran sports? In short , I don't know , but as Jim says , someone here will turn up soon enough and have some info. I would guess though, that it might depend on where you bought it - ie UK or USA, and as with many things, there were options and upgrades , so there may even have been some element of choice? If you are looking to take a Gran Sports back to 'original' then I'm sure you won't have too much problem.

I have a 1976 Gran Sports (US model) that I got for $40 and it is a nice bike but not a valuable high-end classic. In my opinion, there is nothing to be gained in doing a 100 point restoration on a bike like this. It is better to upgrade the bike with period-correct components and aim for a good-looking and good-riding bike rather than a museum piece. For example, and I might be wrong, but I think the original wheels on my Gran Sports were steel so they were replaced. I also upgraded the derailleurs and shifters and installed a sealed bottom bracket, alloy seatpost and favorite saddle. The result is a nice fillet brazed bike that is light and fun to ride. Well, as long as you ignore the clunky clamp-on water bottle holder.

I have the original brochure from the 1976 Gran Sports USA model. It lists the saddle as "Racing style plastic". I have several Viscount models that still had that saddle when I purchased them. They have no brand markings on their underside so they really aren't a "branded" item. Probably the worst, least forgiving, rock hard saddle I've ever experienced so I'd suggest finding any racing style black saddle that works for you. Good luck!
Cheers, Michael

Cheers, Michael This was the saddle that came supplied with my Sebring in 1975. Millimetre-thick embossed vinyl over a rock hard plastic base. As triitout says, possibly the least forgiving saddle I've ever had the discomfort of riding. DSC02554 by RMT@261, on Flickr I recall reading an article a few years ago, reflecting on Fizik's latest mobile 'phone app, where you could input details of your gender, weight, preferred riding style/position, etc. etc., which would then recommend the particular Fizik saddle to suit your requirements. The reviewer concluded that Brooks could offer a similar app, but the answer would always come up as the B17.

One of the hard plastic saddles on that era Viscount was the Brooks Vittesse 400 (not sure of that spelling)
Not a very nice ride though.
