Not really sure what this is - was there just a 400 model (without the EX or AX?) And I cant recall ever seeing a red 400 of any description. Shimano 400 RD was what the Indy 500 mid range had. But to has brazed on cables guides. He should have listed it as 'barn find' and 'real, early '80's cobwebs'. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/234588490167?hash=item369e9049b7:g:fd0AAOSwXQNipiA2

I'm surprised to see a lugged "aerospace" frame. Perhaps it is a "limited edition custom hand built barn find", certainly worth the current £11.50 bid.

Viscounts are like M & M's (or Smarties for the UK folks). Pick your favorite color and then search for a model. I do like the price, and red just brings out the speed demon in me!

Actually, this bike might be more versatile than it appears. Does anyone see an extra air valve in the photos?

My first Viscount, bought from new in 1980 or '81 was an Aerospace 400. By then all of the Aerospace models were lugged. Mine was in a rather nice powder blue, without the go-faster stripes but with the engraved tops to the seat stays. The frame still exists although it cracked across the bottom bracket shell. I bought a similar silver 400 frame, but with the stripes, which I use now. My original 400 had a fine mixture of equipment: Shimano 600 RD (not ex), Dura Ace FD, Weinman brakes & levers &c. Here's a picture of it: My original Viscount Aerospace 400 by John Cockaday, on Flickr And here's a red one from a 1981 flyer: page_3 by John Cockaday, on Flickr

Thanks for clarification John. I just couldn't place it in the line up. And the colour threw me off a bit.

Thanks for clarification John. I just couldn't place it in the line up. And the colour threw me off a bit. I meant to add that the '400' model name does suggest Shimano 400 components, particularly as the '600ex' (which I also have - identical frame) did come with 600ex bits. But I think 400 (and indeed 500) derailleurs are quite rare. I'm pretty sure that the bike shop where I bought my 400 wouldn't have randomly upgraded the factory-provided equipment. Perhaps Viscount got a good deal from Shimano on 600 stuff, which had been current since the early 1970s and was probably being outsold by 600ex Arabesque by 1980/81. (I specified the rack, guards / fenders and mirror as additions myself.)
