Just thought I would share today's ride. It has been hot and our elk are attracted to the lakes. I saw these guys as I rode by.

Nice! Is that a formed/man made lake or natural Jim?

Complicated answer, essentially the lakes are mostly man made by developing springs. Our lakes are in ancient lake beds in which water seeps to the surface during the wet season (hence Bear Valley Springs). A seasonal stream also runs through the middle of the area. One lake (far right) is a natural seasonal lake. The other lakes were dug into the ancient lake beds and their level is mostly maintained by the water table. Each lake has a small dam and spillway to control flooding. We have five lakes in all; two of our lakes act as reservoirs and are pumped to the lakes adjoining parks to maintain water levels during the dry season.
Our Native Americans have an oral history that describes the area as having two natural lakes that (over time) have been either filled by silt or shrunk as the west has been drying out for the last few hundred years.

Have you been experiencing the 100+ degree weather? How are you handling whatever heat is being thrown at you? I'm finding the increasingly hot and humid weather on Long Island makes swimming at the town pool more attractive than road cycling but being as addicted as I am, I still haven't stopped. Our high was 93F which is very hot for us. Our humidity is only 22% and we have a nice breeze; very comfortable in the shade. If we go down the mountain to either the desert or central valley it would be more like 106-107F, yucky hot. Our evenings are about 50F, plus or minus. Morning rides are just right. This morning I took the Viscount to the lake, sat in the shade and drank iced coffee. It was great! I have not ridden the old girl for a few months leaving her forsaken to other rides. Today's ride reminded just how nice old Viscounts are. Viscount at Four Island Lake BVS Aug 10 2021 by Jim_Gude, on Flickr Ride Happy Jim
