Yesterday morning we had 3 inches of snow on the ground; in the afternoon, the sun came out and melted the stuff. This leaves a lot of sand and gravel at the edge of the road; what to do? Well get out the the recently built old bike that has fat rims with cyclocross tires. I easily pushed through the dirty gravely roads and then on to a lumpy gravel road/trail. This road is off limits to most of my bikes, so this was a treat. The old bike was the perfect tool for the job; in fact it deserves a name "Old Blue".
Cheers Jim

Nice one Jim, lovely scenery, tidy Trek as well. Not too different to places I frequent on the hybrid but no mountains in the background here.
I’ve noticed you are using a 45% handlebar stem on a few bikes, how you finding that, more comfortable?

This particular Trek is more a sight seeing adventure bike than my other classic road bikes; hence the stem, comfy saddle, fat tires.
Cheers Jim

I can almost taste the fresh air in those photos there Jim! I'd love to be out on that ride with you. What kind of temperature did it reach in the afternoon? Was it still 'gloves weather'?

What width are the rims Jim and are you running something like 700 x 35 tyres?
I’ve considered some hybrid wheels on one of the old steel bikes to make it more off-road compatible with larger tyres. The last time I tried it on standard road bike wheels 700 x 30 tyres was about the max the rims would cope with.

The actual sizing seems a bit on the small side. The rims are an old touring set and wider than most found on road bikes; I think 22mm inside width and they even have Schrader valves. On or off the road, they work great!

Thanks Jim. Ive found some ‘hybrid’ wheels online with a wider rim and 130mm OLD that should easily spring into 126mm dropouts. Might try the LBS first though to see if he has anything in. Most of the trails around us are still a bit too muddy in places with the weather for taking anything other than a MTB with knobbly tyres out on. The dry/warm weather can’t come soon enough.

All the Best Jim I hope to make it over there sometime in the future Jim, and bike riding would feature in that trip. I appreciate the offer.
