Like many of you, all of the bikes which reside with me were built up from frames. Whenever I complete a bike, the initial first couple of rides usually includes a fine tuning or adjustment of at least a couple of components. This was the case in my recent completion of the Viscount Aerospace GP. One lingering issue which escaped resolution until yesterday, was the noise and occasional chain jump in my 53-11 combination. It turned out to be something I had forgotten about, the Wipperman Connex chain master link is directional. I had originally experienced some noise in both the 53-12 and 53-11 gears, but when I checked and corrected the derailleur hanger position and the chain line was adjusted 2mm out on the drive side, that corrected the 53-12 issues, leading me to believe I was on the right track. The straightening of the hanger and the chainline adjustment did make a difference, but it wasn't until I hit the right combination of Google search words, did it hit me. I had installed the chain by memory and without the directions I used with all of the major components. Once I looked at the Wipperman website, I knew what I had done. I'm posting this here because if I had not had an 11 tooth cog, I might not have realized what I had done. I can now concentrate on those Strava segments where that high gear is really needed to get me to move up in the rankings. My initial thought was, what the hell is going on? Turns out it was something simple.

Good that it was something simple. It’s sometimes easy to overlook something or get distracted and forget to do something. My chain was slipping going onto the big ring on the new crank I installed on the 400, it was fine in the stand but not when I took it for a test ride. Got home and started looking at the limit screws on the front derailleur, and the chain line, then realised I’d not lowered the front derailleur cage closer to the new smaller chainring It’s fine now, I was worried it would be something costly like the new BB may be the wrong size.
