I've tried tire liners with some degree of success, one called Mr. Tuffy, I think. I've also tried thick thorn resistant tubes (heavy), and various tires with Kevlar belts and such. I'm currently trying some tire liners made by Tannus on my wife's bike. They fill up most of the tire and you then use a much smaller tube. You're supposed to be able to ride flat for at least 25mi. I also have some airless tires made by the same company on one of my bikes, but only about 75mi. experience with these on 95+dF pavement. So far, so good. If I were commuting exclusively by bike that might just be the way to go. The airless are pretty expensive, around US90$ per wheel installed at the shop I contract with. I wouldn't normally invest that in an unproven concept tire but the owner of the shop I is using me as a data point I guess, and installed them for me at his cost. The liners for my wife's bike are less than half the cost of airless. I've also used an old tube with the valve cut out as a tire liner, and I've also seen but never tried using an old tire with the bead cut off as a low cost liner. Best, John "wheelson"
