Apologies for this not being a Viscount technical question but I must be honest and say I dare not post up on a main forum for fear of terrible ridicule for my lack of knowledge of these modern bikes...can anybody give any advice here?
I went on cycle path ride on Tuesday with my wife (me on the Deore 18ax , her on her mixte Sebring). The path winds through some woods and she wanted to go 'off piste' a bit. So, rather than damage the Sebring I scoured eBay and bought her a second hand Raleigh X1 hybrid womens bike for next to nothing.
Picked it up on Friday and very nice it is.
We've been out on the bikes today and done all the usual things to fit the bike to her and check it over.
Now, this is where the question comes in- and bear in mind that I have never ridden/owned a bike made after about 1986. So, I don't know anything about these modern bikes. It does seem very well made though, and quite decent quality. Things seem easy to adjust and fix from the half hours tinkering I have just been doing.
But...the chain as it leaves the back sprockets is 'twisted' ;it is angled as seen in these pics. It then 'rights' itself within the next 5 inches or so to be square as it approaches the chainset. It seems worse when on the smallest front ring and biggest back.
To me this looks so wrong but I am unsure where to start. The chain itself and the teeth on the rear block are just different to what I am used to. So I am out of my very small knowledge and maintenance zone.
Also, the chain looks a bit slack to my eyes but there is no ability to move the back wheel back as it has a fixed position in the frame. All of this new stuff is fascinating , as if I just came forward in a time machine from the mid 80's and everything has gone futuristic.
So the question is- is this 'normal' on this kind of modern bike with the much bigger gear ratios than I am familiar with? Or is it a problem, and if so what is the fix?
BTW the photo's aren't optical illusions- the chain is at such an angle at one point that you can see the rivets on the inside when you stand directly above the chain at 90degrees
