I thought I had better me be my thread to here, from the welcome page. Dismantled the bike this morning, and am pleased to say the cranks came off, the crank shaft came out,and the BB bearings came out too! Lots add of muck and rust in there, but cleaned up to blue paint inside. The shaft is rusted, but ok where the bearings go. I think I will simply git new bearings, but remive the inner seals so I can lubricate by oiling down the downtube. The bigger question now is whether to respray it or not. It has a little bit of rust here and there. Not sure! photos.app.goo.gl/N9kM9T53uoJUVDjx7

Any ideas as to the year of this bike? The number is 105152.
Brazed frame, Shimano 600 gear bits. Bermalux seat post. Shimano Tourney brakes.
Is the blue Cobalt blue? Thanks, Nick.

Hi Nick - ThanKs for posting. That looks circa '75? But the best dater are the components , if you know they are original. All the Shimano has a date stamp hidden away, but it needs decoding. There is a link somewhere here on this site , but might much easier be found by a Google search. The numbers under the BB are a mystery to even seasoned Viscount followers , so that can't ever really be of help. Great to have you on the forum! Keep us posted Regards Jem

Thanks Jem, I didn't know about the date codes, so that was a real help!
Tourney brakes marked AX, 1976 Stem, SR, 77F, June '77 Front hub, Shimano B1 Sept '77
So my guess is it was sold around spring 1978.
Just ordered some Dunlop bearings. I was tempted by the stainless steel version, but in the end stayed with steel. I am going to bore a drainage hole and in the BB, as the rust and muck that came out didn't help the bearings at all. I think it's only ever covered a hundred miles, if that, and probably spent the last forty years sat and in a shed . The Shimano brake blocks are not even bedded in, untouched over most of the pads! There was a tide line on the wheels, so maybe it was a flooded shed. I got it from the tip, so not sure where it actually came from.
Cobalt blue??

Got it from the skip?...bravo for saving that.
I can't recall what they call that colour, but someone will know, and I bet it's on the forum here somewhere, but the search function isn't great

There is local hub that collects all bikes from amenity tips, around 800 per month. Most go to Africa. Loads of Apollos and BSOs. What would you like?
Dunlop bearings have arrived. I will warm the BB up with a heater, and put the bearings in the freezer before fitting. Usually works well.

I always fancied one of those, but really doubt I have time or space to do one up at the minute - but if ever you see one I would be interested. I can't recall the model , maybe San Remo? Designed by Ernie Clements I think? And they did a Mercyx model in the mid 70's when I was a kid and massively envious of that name on a bike. I also regret letting a Koga-Miyata go (albeit, it was a bit small for me), it was a great looking bike. If you see anything in 23/23.5 I would be interested. Who knows, with this spare time on my hands with this virus lock down, maybe I would get around to doing one up. That is of course after I get all the decorating and gardening jobs that I have on my list? By the way, that kind of recycle scheme that you mention ,they did near me for a while and took Post Office bikes and did them up to send to Africa. I think they moved to near Stoke on Trent now, but I was temped to find out and go help out and volunteer stripping the bikes etc. Jem EDIT - just came to me after I'd logged off...a Falcon Black Diamond. Very much in the same mould as the Viscount of the era , and probably a competitor for the same market? Decent Shimano components.

I will ask Paddy, who runs it. It's s bit muddy at the moment! Usually spring gets really busy!
Today I fitted new bearings. Took a while to get them right. They are still a bit draggy but they are as good as I can get. In the end I had to use two straight edges and calipers to seat them parraelle. A right fiddle faddle. Pulled the bearings in with 12mm studding and sockets driving the outer edge of the bearing. The BB was too hot to touch, with a bit air gun. No real effort. The crank I pushed in with a big bench vice, with a tube on the outer face to support the inner race. Now that was tight, and I should have put it in the freezer first.
After that I removed all the stickers, acetoned it, sanded out all the rust, then the rest of the frame, and gave it two coats of high build two pack primer.

The frame is back home in the shed now. The cranks are polished and back on, as are the forks with new bearings. The handle bars and brakes have been polished, and are also back on. I dismantled the brakes (Shimano Tourney) but before polishing them filed away all the casting marks, then sanded and finally polished. They too are back on the frame. On to the wheels, and the rear wheel had to go to the bike shop to remove the free wheel, as I didn't have the tool. It then took a whole evening to clean and polish up the Ali rim and spokes. I de-rusted the cassette and it's cleaned up very well. The freewheel has been flushed and oiled. Cleaned the bearings out and new bike grease us back in. Thanks for the links for tyres. A pair of tyres, tubes and rim tapes for 17.95 from Bankrupt bike parts! So just the front wheel to do, brake cables bar tape and stickers! I'm still in full time work so hopefully will be ridable by the weekend. photos.app.goo.gl/ByeLcVfeAxpPQ2S8Aphotos.app.goo.gl/kn94jNXBGhF2LJng7photos.app.goo.gl/CYyf63TkaK3uZ6g58photos.app.goo.gl/taMXeL14WAUpLRFeAphotos.app.goo.gl/Mcx3pLJjrvp6ez1P6photos.app.goo.gl/xttnRdyQRQzXT56y9

The Falcon was the nicer bike to ride but the Clements looked better.

Something about the paint detailing around the lugs just sets a bike of that era off really well. I love it
