I’ve finally got a Metro 3 shopping bike. It came with 26” wheels, does anyone know if this is correct please?

It would seem that all "town" bikes came with 26" wheels back in the day. Alloy rims would e a huge improvement in the brake department. Enjoy your rides to the pub! Cheers, Pete.

Cheers Pete, I was thinking of getting them rebuilt with alloy rims.

Kev, the Metro 3 wheels are 26 x 1 3/8.
Like Pete says, a great pub bike!

Just looked at the eBay ad and the bike is identical to - but in far better condition - than the one I have.
The Union dynamo system is identical to the one on my 5-speed Sport, but I don't know whether or not it was fitted in the factory.
Your bike will also have Union pedals.

Kev, the Metro 3 wheels are 26 x 1 3/8. Like Pete says, a great pub bike! Kev, I have a feeling you'll know this already, but there are a few 26" sizes if you're thinking of ordering new alloy rims. See Wikipedia extract below: Screen Shot 2019-08-17 at 14.01.51 by RMT@261, on Flickr Sprockit's suggestion that your Metro wheels are 26 x 1 3/8 indicates the existing rims may be 650A size - ISO 37-590. SJS cycles have a limited choice of rims and tyres in this size. If you're prepared to lose the originality, modern "MTB" 26" wheels - with a 559mm ETRO - will give you a much wider choice of rims and rigid or folding tyres. I have just re-built the rear wheel from my 1995 Raleigh MTB with a silver Ryde Zac19 rim. Its not as shiny as your chromed steel rims, but the braking is good. They do them with 32 or 36 eyeleted spoke holes. Make sure you order the right one (ask me how I know!). Best wishes, RobT

Cheers guys. I’ll try it a few times with the original rims before I decide. I’m not planning to be braking in the rain while I descend down a mountain, so may get away with it. Current tyres are 26 x 1 3/8 as you say.

PS. Overall condition is very good. Tubes, paintwork and chrome are all excellent. Bearings feel a bit worn but not disastrously so, and I may try introducing some oil to the SA hub.

Great 26” info Rob, there’s actually a massive difference between these 26” wheels and MTB spec. So much for fitting my old mountain bike touring tyres.

PS I’ve ordered some Woods inner tubes from SJS after following your link thanks Rob. Great that they stock these obscure types + I fancy keeping it original so won’t change to schraeder.
