Anyone have the RD bottom bracket cable guide snap off? I had that lovely experience yesterday on my original Gran Touring while shifting to get up a nice big hill. Never good to hear a "snap" and feel the shift lever just go slack. Just ordered a bolt on NOS Zeus cable guide to do the fix. It'll match the Zeus downtube shifter upgrade I made back in the early 80's. I guess after 42 years and 30000+ miles, bad things can happen. Lucky for me I changed my route and got home in one piece minus RD shifting. The prior Sunday I had a run in with a driver going through a stop sign while riding my new Gran Touring twin.http://viscountandlambert.boards.net/thread/1248/new-additions. The bike appears to be in one piece after the seat, front wheel, and FD were all knocked out of wack. My ankle took the hit and is now slowly coming around from some nice deep cuts, bruising and swelling. Happily, nothing broken, with just ice, rest and antibiotics doing the trick. Did my last triathlon of the season the prior Sunday, so at least I don't have to worry about running for a while. I think I've now used up half of my nine lives. Need to feel the love from those 2 bikes again. They've been involved in some bad karma as of late

Good to hear that you are not seriously damaged and that the treatment soon has you running on your ankle again. Hope the bikes are well on their way to recovery too. I've never had a braze on bb cable guide fail, but (regardless of manufacturer) the attachment always seems a bit flimsy to me, with the pull of the cable apparently acting in just the right direction required to peel the braze apart.

I am so sorry to hear of your accident; at least you are healing. Also, I hope the car stopped and accepted responsibility. Inattentive drivers often scare me, but in our rural area, conflicts with cars is rather uncommon. In our urban areas, after hitting a cyclist, drivers often do not stop. Perhaps because so many lack a social conscience, drivers license and/or insurance. I have never seen a serious cyclists (like you and the rest of our group) ride in an unsafe manner, yet they may have close calls with cars. Not all ride like we do. While I am driving in Bakersfield (my nearest urban area) some cyclists truly scare me. They sometimes seem near suicidal; I have seen them running stop lights directly in front of my car, riding the wrong way in the middle of heavy traffic, while on Meth, at night, without lights, kind of things. Bakersfield has nearly 150 (reported) car bike collisions each month; it seems a wonder that only a few are killed.
In Bakersfield, we have a great cycling advocacy group, "Bike Bakersfield." They promote safety, repair bikes, teach bike repair, give away bike lights, give bikes to the poor, and so on.
Cheers Jim

Michael - Sorry to hear this news but at least you are on the mend and it's not too serious. Such a shame when a prized bike gets damaged in these circumstances.
As you point out, with wear and tear on a 42 year old bike it's inevitable at some point things will just give up

Never had that happen myself. Very glad you're OK! It's so easy for things to go badly on the road. I remember reading that the threshhold for fatal impact for a human body is as low as 20km/h. b

Thanks for the well wishes Bendo and the three J's (John, Jim, Jem). Kinda sounds like a vintage 60's rock group! Just got back from my followup and things are slowly healing. It's been suggested to me that I'm an idiot (as are all impatient athletes by my non-athletic doctor) for going for a few short easy rides to shake off the dread of dealing with sharing the road with cars again. I've got to be limiting any cycling/weight bearing exercise for at least a few weeks if I want to get rid of the swelling. I'll get reacquainted with the pool and couch tomorrow having fortuitously scheduled vacation this week. Original plan was to relive the glory of Ironman 70.3 Mont Tremblant, Quebec which I did in 2012. I settled for 3 days in upstate NY instead and a broken cable guide!
I think I will be starting the offseason bike cleanup if I'm going totally bonkers. I just received my VeloCals order with nice new decal set for my red/white GP and blue/silver Pro. Jim, as we discussed quite a while ago when you did your custom colors from VeloCals, I finally ordered the large Viscount downtube decal in blue with yellow outline for my Kiwi green single speed. It should look very cool! I'll post it up when done.
It's great to be part of this wonderful and caring international Viscount group!
Cheers, Michael

It's been suggested to me that I'm an idiot (as are all impatient athletes by my non-athletic doctor) I had a muscle tear couple of years back from playing football. Doctor made it clear he thought at my age I should be playing chess or something. Fine, but when you then seize up , put some weight on and sit in front of the TV, then quite rightly they would tell me to get active and move about... Out of all the 'sports', cycling must be up there with swimming as the best/safest/lowest impact ? Yes, the absence of cars driven by thoughtless people might help lower the risk of injury but the alternative of not riding isn't an option for most of us who love it.

Here it is Jim, DSCN1126 DSCN1127 Jem, totally agree with you. More chance of scar tissue forming from inactivity. Just came back from a very light, easy ride and icing now. I'm just calling it "physical therapy". So far so good!

Your paint scheme is TOTALLY WILD! I especially like how the blue and yellow decal colors go with the lime green.

Sounds like a nasty shunt. Had a car yesterday indicate right so I went to pass him to the left and he just turned left, missed me by mm then shouted as if it was my fault.........oh well I guess it was, I mean in Italy indicating is quite rare anyway so I should really have known he had only hit it in error and was liable to turn any way he felt like doing and my response should have been to sit back and wait like a good chap..........!
Glad you survived and hope the back is back on the road soon.
