Fork Crown Mounted Pletscher Front Rack. www.bikerecyclery.com/nib-nos-pletscher-front-rack-fork-crown-mount/That's a real antique, bike-boom vintage at least, and yes, if loaded too much they will break but they are rather handsome. So, beware of that if someone buys it. It tightens up around the fork crown. Does one note, how it actually affixes to the (often chrome) fork crown in this case. See the screw-holes on the fork crown attachment, that way, you can see they are the same kinds of racks, very rare too, I would think. I like the rear light too, that's pretty big. I think I got one of those racks from a bike-co-op once, used parts. Bike forums net thread discusses: www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage/994002-peltcher-fork-mounted-front-rack-questions.html , notice how the members there seem to note, they don't carry that much weight. ( Note, the link is not working from the forum but if one is really interested, the exact name of the thread is: "Peltcher fork mounted front rack questions", maybe a bikeforums.net, bing or google search would bring that up)Front racks seem to be a bit problematic, in fitting, in carrying.

I still have one of those rear lights. I even remember when they were 'the new thing'. The batteries needed are huge too, very heavy. Good if you are looking to recreate that very authentic 1978 vibe on a retro bike, but for nothing else.

Viscount saddle, from Viscount the bike company or Viscount the bike seat company. I've seen those seats, I just don't know. Thank you in advance.

I have one of those Pletscher front racks. I bought it NIB (new in bag) ages ago for a good price. They often go for quite a lot of money on eBay - more than the starting price for the bike. I thought to put it as a front basket support on my wife's Raleigh but, since it has unicrown forks, that wouldn't work. The rack may go on a Viscount at some point, but the mounting system seems certain to scrape any paint off the top of the forks.
There are various Viscount branded saddles which weren't made by the Viscount saddle company. The one on this bike is one of those, I think it is the leatherette covered version. Often the Viscount label comes off. There are also plastic versions apparently made for Viscount / for Brooks, including a striking red one often found on the Tony Doyle Viscounts (which have a red/white colour scheme). There were also the early Lambert branded suede covered saddles (a stick on metallic label at the back). For some time, Viscounts used leather saddles made by Middlemore and some (early ones?) of these were branded 'Viscount'. Later, the standard Middlemore brand was used. These are of a quality approaching that of Brooks, or at least Wrights.

Just noticed the tennis racket holder clamped to the front forks. Another cool period feature. Visions of a young lady riding the bike in a pleated tennis skirt with a white blouse, white ankle socks and plimsolls. Ahh. must go to have a cold shower ...

If it was seen as a 'lady's bike', it might have only had six gears - i.e. a single chainwheel. There was a quaint idea that ladies couldn't manage two derailleurs. Of course, mixtes are unisex - I rode mine into work today, the weather not being nice - but the "Dusty Pink" colour might indicate that it was intended for women.

What age is this likely to be, I am guessing late 70’s or is it much later than that?

It has a 1980 "Champions" sticker on the top of the down-tube, so I'd guess it's a 1981 model.

I hadn’t spotted that decal as I’m using the phone so thanks for that. The 1981 version according to the catalogue of that year was totally different though, it had a different top tube and 5 speed system as opposed to 6. Must be a later model but I do t have any catalogues after that so cannot check. It’s juat a nice bike and intrigues me that’s all although at 22.5” too big for my wife and not a colour my daughter likes so I’m getting negative responses from both plus it’s not a bike for me........! flic.kr/p/25Dsghh

I fancy making a bid, but if anyone else is interested I wont. Not interested in a bidding war especially when its a far distance away.

I was 50/50 on this myself so you have made my mind up for me and I will not bid on it if you are wanting to have a go.
