Geez, you can't even buy a decent tire for $13, but what sinkhole are you falling into trying to make it roadworthy? Agree, very tempting if you haven't ran out of room yet!

Well, I have paid more than that for less bike than that, but I really wouldn't want to put the time, effort or money into putting it back to top shape (and I am struggling for space). I would either run it as a winter bike for trips to the shop, or use the porthole chainset, FD and any other bits that could augment my fleet. However, I always feel a touch guilty at ending the life of a bike in that way.

Me........... :-)
Winter project to keep me out of mischief. Just finished a Carlton Grand Prix restoration and got the bug. Not tackled a Lambert before so relish the challenge and will post updates now I'm on the blog. Spent time restoring cars in the past but found the prices were getting out of hand and bikes simply take up less room. Also easier to conceal additional bikes from my wife than a car so it seems the way to go.

Congratulations! That is going to be a great ride. I used to have a thing for vintage watches (mainly Japanese 60's & 70's) , and when they went from pocket money to something else, I stopped that and I started to pick Viscount up that were all in double figures and most times below £40. Although, watches were easier to conceal...

Am spending a lot of time in China these days and a friend there started to buy up old Chinese watches, Shanghai Watch or Hongqi mainly. Still affordable and found in secondhand shops but once the Chinese market wakes up to them the prices will rocket. They are on the edge of the classic car market already so watch old car prices soar once it starts.

Well the bulk of the work is done, the frame is stripped and I’m Bob Jackson’s for a full paint job. Most of the components were salvaged, that’ said with a lot of work and Autosol but amazing how well grime md oil seems to preserve old bikes. Hope to get this all rebuilt by Easter and then we can see what the end result is like. I set a budget of £400 to do this bike, have ended up at £440 so not bad and a lot of classic bike for little money, an MOT on a car costs this even without much needed so I see it as a bargain and a load of fun in doing it.
Will post pictures once finished a hope to meet up with other owners in the future. BTW there was another Lambert in for repainting when I dropped mine off. White with black so anyone’s here?

You've right, when you look at relative costs for other things that don't give half as much fun, a bike overhaul is a great project.
That says something when there are 2 x 40 year old British bike frames both in for a re-spary at the same time. They last, and they are loved. Can't imagine many people having as much love for a bike they buy this Christmas in the year 2057, can you?
You do know we have a Viscount rally in the summer?

When I dropped mine off with BJ’s Donald told me they have never been as busy with this sort of work. I took a few pieces of chrome to RS in Manchester and they said the same, bike parts all over the place. Seems old bikes are making a come back hence I have a few restoration jobs lined up as I see them rising in price and soon the cheap project is going to cost a packet. Have a 1930’s Carlton to follow the Lambert and have spent a lot of time sourcing just the right parts to get this back to its original spec as a TT bike but period components are already commanding silly money with inflated prices on E Bay and at times jumbles.
Are there details on the Viscount meet on the blog? I live mostly in China or Italy with regular trips to the UK so would try and plan around meets if possible.

flic.kr/p/FDtjLYShould be a link to the image of my freshly painted Lambert frame Looks like a beautiful piece of work. To insert photos from your Flickr account onto the forum, using a PC/Mac: 1. Select & open the photo from your Flickr album; 2. Click on the 'Share Photo' curled arrow in the bottom right hand corner of the screen; 3. Select 'BB Code' (not 'Share') from the list of 4 choices in the 'Share 1 photo to:" dialogue box that appears in the middle of your screen; 4. Choose what size image you want to show on the forum (square, thumbnail, small, medium, large, original) 5. Copy the BB code highlighted in blue; 6. Paste the BB code into your message on the forum; 7. 'Create post' on the forum (or 'save changes' if adding a picture to an existing post). Et voila! Painted Frame by Nicholas Preston, on Flickr (I know, no-one loves a smartass!)

I think that you need to select 'public' instead of 'private' in your viewing privacy settings if you want the pictures to display on the forum. (Scroll down the Flickr image page, below the camera details under the picture, to Additional info and 'unlock'.) I can see the linked pictures one at a time if I click on the links, but they aren't on general display.

Thanks, just changed this so fingers crossed it should work now.
Looking forwards to the rebuilding of this now, all parts are cleaned, restored and polished. I have to rebuild the wheels yet as the spokes were bad, most snapped the minute you tried to turn the adjuster and they were done. Got all new bearings for the hubs and B.B., hope they go in easier than they came out that’s for sure! With a fair wind I will have this on the road by late March and can add pictures as I go now I have got there on Flickr.

I’m now part way through rebuilding the Lambert and it’s given me a few headaches. The B.B. bearings were a pain in the a** and required far more “assistance “ to go in than I expected. That said the headset was a walk in the park and took no time at all. Next up is a wheel rebuild, the hubs and Mavic rims are polished up and I have new spokes so just need to lace them, say it quickly and it sounds less work 🙄. The QR’s are reassembled after I had them rechromed, they were just too far gone and I really wanted to keep this bike as close to original as possible. The one thing I have not got original is the front clamp for the front dreailure, mine was broken so may end up having to adapt a Simplex one bought from a jumble, not made my mind up on this yet. Few pictures below of progress so far. flic.kr/p/21HVWJJflic.kr/p/EPEQqcflic.kr/p/237yP32flic.kr/p/21HVWM9

Looking for some advice.......the gold anodised plate on the Lambert handlebars is quite badly scratched on mine and whilst I can always live with it would like to replace if I could......had anyone ever managed to get these made and if so where. Saw a set of spare bars in E Bay but they are in the US and I’m in Europe so a pain to get shipped.......

I don’t know if anyone remembers the very tired old Lambert GP from the above thread but just an update as I have nearly finished the project whilst at my home in Italy over the Easter holiday. The pedals are still being worked on as I have the originals but they were in a sorry state and needed a lot of TLC (by he way I don’t have any end caps, anyone got any or V ones I can procure and have some L’s made up?), I’m missing some brake cable which is on order and the back wheel is incorrect as I bought the wrong length spokes for the rebuild so have just dropped a spare 7 speed one on for now. The saddle on is an old Brooks but I do still have the original which will be refinished with some suede when I find some the right colour and the whole bike has cost just under £400 to do. Even if I say so myself this looks to be worth every penny. I have some new forks that will be painted up to use rather than the 40 odd year old Death Fork but thats for a later date. Below are some links to the first images from the workshop, once finished I will drag her up a mountain here and take some “proper” ones but to say I’m pleased with the outcome is an understatement. What is sad though is how little bikes are worth, whilst I’m not looking to sell this and am delighted to have in my collection it will no doubt not be worth what I spent especially in terms of man hours and should I sell would be better to break it and sell as components which is what so many people seem to do now. The world has gone mad.......! flic.kr/p/HSVntfflic.kr/p/HSVnsyflic.kr/p/HSVnsoflic.kr/p/24Vyejuflic.kr/p/25WPYMq
