My latest Viscount project
This was, and still is, a painful build. It's a different frame, 1" taller, than my previous TT effort. You would think it would go together easily and fit me better than the first one, but I'm still setting the position, and will add a few ounces with high risers for the aero extensions. The rear end measures 124mm across, where both of my other Viscounts measure 127 which created it's own set of problems.
On the other hand -
The Huret Jubilee rear derailleur is insanely light, especially since swapping the OEM pulleys for a pair of light alloy Bullseyes. The SunTour bar end shifters work flawlessly, and even the very old school Weinmann 500 side pull brakes are excellent stoppers. Exustar brand pedals with Ti axles that are clones of Look Keo, a Ti spindle off of eBay that required some work at a local machine shop, Thomson seat post w/ a Terry TT saddle, also with Ti rails. I enjoyed putting shiny, slippery, paper thin Benotto tape on the bars, and I really like the look.
The highlight of the entire project has to be the front wheel. The previous version was an original hub, laced onto a Araya Aero 1 rim, straightforward 36 hole x3 build, topped with a Tufo tubular. For this year I'm experimenting - look closely in the pics and you'll note the same components, but only 24 spokes. It rather looks like a Campagnolo G3 or something. It ended up as a x2 wheel, because of the missing spokes. I've tested it, cornered it, sprinted it ( a relative term, when one considers my "sprint") and it's fine.
With lights, as pictured, it weighs 20 lb, 1.6 oz, or 9.14 kg
I'm really hoping this skinny little feather weight will get me through the 2nd half of this year's 24 Hour Challenge (happening this freaking weekend already). the night loop is 7.6 miles, with a 2 mile descent that bites you by taking it all back in less than half a mile, somewhere between 20 and 30 times through the night.
