I'm not really having a problem with chain slap but almost overnight, it seems I have a lot more slack in the chain. It baffles me, I shortened it up by about 5 links. That's still not enough but will do for the near future. I'm just looking for advice. I never saw a chain basically get longer, I know there are those little tools where you can measure the chain.
Thanks for any advice.

Okay, I will check that. Thanks ORT.
It hasn't really move in the dropouts but I will look at that tomorrow anyway. I also have chains on hand. I really don't like to fool with bike chains too much but sometimes one has to.

Your rear derailleur spring has sprung! The main body spring isn't pulling the chain back.
New body spring / derailleur for you. Suppose the spring might have just jumped within the barrel, more likely the tab snapped off the bottom.
Have fun.

Your rear derailleur spring has sprung! The main body spring isn't pulling the chain back. That most certainly can cause the problem. I have replaced springs on Campy but not on other brands. If the spring tab is broken, the simplest solution is another derailleur. Don't forget a new chain with the original number of links (before the 5 were removed). What type of derailleur is it? Cheers Jim

And thanks to Bowie; tip of the hat for that kind of bike knowledge. I likely can replace this rear derailleur. It's sort of done okay on the big cog for the last two days; as most of us have, I'm glad I've got a spare bike in the meantime. I just checked it, that definitely seems to be the problem. It has a Suntour Vx for the record and it likely has been used for decades.

I reckon that would be totally repairable. Take a 6mm(ish) allen key and remove that bolt, the spring will be visible, it should have two straight ends, one to located it in the body of the derailleur and the other in the top of the bolt, kinda like this, A lot of plates (most suntour's will) have 2 x positions to re set the spring once it wears. It's likely your's as just slipped out. They are fiddly getting back in but it will be worth it, like this prior victory; Post your video in victory when successful

Again, this is all helpful. Thank you.
This is a holiday weekend; so, I'm not sure if it will be immediately resolved.
