A few of you may have noticed that in my 'Hello' post, I mentioned that the headset bearings on my 1978 Grand Sport had suffered a failure of the top race, inboard element. I speculated that this had emanated from a crack on the inner bore, possibly due to the rather rough machined inner bore surface or poor assembly technique. Here's a picture of the offending item, anybody suffered this before or wish to pass an opinion ? Failed headset bearing 1 by Sylvie N, on Flickr

Was the failed area at the front or rear of the head tube. Running a bit loose may have caused an impact loading under braking? I'm sure you would have thought of this though. Cheers, Pete.

Now that I can't say, but certainly in the fore and aft' direction. It wasn't brake loading as it was fine up to the previous day with no movement and had been tightened to the 'sweet spot'. I'm sure it was the hammering it got while riding over the cobbled road known as 'Welsh Back' here in Bristol, where my friend likes visiting a cafe. I was keen to road test my new saddle, which was fine, certainly a road I'm going to be riding slower on in future as Rona has mentioned that the cobbled streets of Edinburgh did for the bottom bracket of her bike.
