Some success stories with a big hammer over the holiday weekend. Yesterday I successfully knocked out a cartridge bearing bb from my most recent acquisition, with no collateral damage. Once out the bearings didn't seem too bad (of course) but previously the spindle would hardly turn.
Today, using a heavy lump hammer and a cold chisel, I finally got rid of the remains of a bb that had been stuck in with Araldite or some such glue.
This frame is destined to become my imitation SupaBike, with black first gen Dura Ace components. It has Mark 3 Death Forks and the diameter of the seat for the head set bottom race turned out to be 26.8 mm, requiring some careful filing before the DA bottom race (26.4 mm inside dia) would fit. Has anyone else had headset fitting problems with Viscounts?
Back to work tomorrow.

You know what they say - 'When in doubt, use a bigger hammer' . . .
. . . and it's worked!
Can't really help with the headset, although you'd think that the seats for the headset races would all be the same diameter.

Yes I have had the same problem on MK111 fork. I had Barry Chick re-cut the fork crown to 26.4. I then found the stack height was too much for the steerer length I had, so had to cut 3mm off the head tube then ream and face to fit. It is amazing how smooth the steering is now with everything inline.

Hi Steve, if you're sure of the dimensions, perhaps we can add these to the "measurements" thread under the technical section? Just eyeballing my AP, it looks like the Viscount headset height is 42mm, and from what John's saying, the crown race bore is 26.8mm. Can you, or anyone else confirm? Best, Rod

I know it's not a reference, but I see eBay item 353500729447 stating some dimensions ...
"Lambert Viscount headset, 1 inch threaded ... 27.0 crown race. 48 pcs ball bearings 5/32. Weight 164g"
I'd take John's word over eBay, anytime, but can anyone else confirm the crown diameter and stack height? Thanks, Rod

I just put the calipers on two forks, an original death fork and a factory recall Tange replacement. The crown race receiver is 26.8mm on the original and 27.0mm on the replacement. From what I have seen, modern headsets are available in 26.4mm (ISO) and 27.0mm (JIS). I would use the JIS version in either case because you would have a devil of a time fitting the ISO version. I have used the Tange-Seiki Levin CDS headset several times. It is very smooth, quite durable, and has a short stack height. I have put about 7000 miles on this headset on one bike, 4000 on another. No indexing or problems even with very little maintenance. I replaced the caged balls with loose ones at first maintenence at maybe 2000 miles.

Thanks Brian ... very useful to have another data point supporting 26.8mm on original DF's. Best, Rod

You mean the crown race? I had no probs at all with diameters, but I can't remember whether I have an ISO or a JIS headset, and whether or not this was an issue at the time (it's been a while). But it sounds like you sorted it pretty well.
First gen Dura Ace stack height is certainly higher than original Viscount headset height. Using the aluminium fork that came with the frame I have had to do without the keyed lockring. That leaves just enough thread on the top of the steerer for the Dura Ace locknut to get purchase. It just means you have to be careful and strong with tightening down the locknut without crushing the bearings. And keep an eye on it loosening as you ride, especially if you do a lot of miles on hard tyres. Prob a bit of loctite is in order. The other fix would be to find a fork with a longer steerer obvs.
The benefit of all this fiddling is you get to look down at the name Dura Ace as often as you like while you ride!
