Today I missed my daily ride. Last evening two of my dogs were bitten by a rattlesnake. The dogs encountered a baby rattler as we apparently have a nearby hatch. When I came to the dogs' aid I was able to pull them off the snake and in the dusk, the miserable little thing disappeared into a fenced area behind my shop. I oh so wish that I had been able to smite the little bugger. We then noticed that one dog had been bitten and rushed her to a 24 hour animal hospital in Bakersfield (120 mile round trip). It was like a human emergency room and took what seemed like forever. We arrived back home at 01:30 and discovered that a second dog had also been bitten, but with fewer symptoms; It probably happened at the same time as the first bite. I made another trip to Bakersfield and finally arrived home at 04:15. I was up at 06:30 checking and hunting for snakes (no luck). Today I returned to Bakersfield picked the dogs up (they are doing well) and took them to our family vet at 15:00. About every hour I am doing a snake hunt until I eliminate the threat, or finally give up. I hate to kill anything and this may sound cruel to some, but I just cannot abide poisonous little critters infesting my home and harming my family. It also was expensive, some 3 grand in vet bills.
In my general area, last year a swarm of baby rattlers killed a horse. Nasty little buggers. No doubt ,if we lived in Australia, Africa or Asia, it would have been much worse.
What kind of poisonous snakes afflict your area?
Local stuff
