Hello all! Although new to Viscount bikes, I'm well versed in 'vintage' steel and absolutely love the classic steel lightweights that VL bikes are a part of. Among the many questions I have regarding these bikes, it's the tubing that vexes me the most. What I'd like to know is, who manufactured (or rebadged) the tubing for Viscount Lambert bikes from the early 80's era? Would Trusty have been involved in ordering the tubing to spec from a UK manufacturer or from abroad as was the case with some of the components? Given the proprietary nature of the VL parts and the advancing age of the engineers and administrative staff, will this always remain a mystery? Simply looking to quell my curiosity and cheers for your commitment to this great marquee!

The person to answer in more detail is Busaste, but in case he's not on the forum for a bit, I have some details. The tubing was from the UK steel firm Phoenix. It is straight gauge -ie not butted - 1027 chromium molybdenum steel. Similar to Reynolds 501. Some consider that the quality is better than Reynolds tubing. I don't know if other bike builders used Phoenix tubing. If not, perhaps it was bespoke for Trusty/Lambert/Viscount.

Thanks cusqueno! I did find Busaste's posts on the CTC forum and that lead from one thing to next very quickly. From what I discovered regarding the Phoenix steel company, they were absorbed into divisions of other companies and now exist within the Senior Aerospace company as best I can tell. My thought was to procure some of the 'original' tubing for my own build. Perhaps someone knows of a stockist that purchased the remaining supply years ago (I did read that Falcon may have used the tubes in some of their bikes) or a place where the original Phoenix tubing might be lying spare…fingers crossed?

JohnL, I have just revisited the CTC forum and found probably the same posts that you did: Phoenix steel (page 8/165 in my browser - likely to be different on mobile apps). The CTC Viscount thread is the parent from which this forum sprung, from a desire to have the information scattered through the long CTC thread better organised.
