A personal hero of mine and the greatest boxer from the era when I was growing up. At that time in the early/mid 70's any one of half dozen fighters could have been a worthy champ- George Forman, Ken Norton, Joe Frazier, Floyd Patterson, Henry Cooper(slightly earlier) - all great fighters and I am sure would wipe the floor with any of the heavy weight champions we have had in the last 25 years. But Ali stands above them all.

All these boxers were without a doubt superior athletes but Ali stands out above all for his superior mind.

So true Michael - and a man with courage to stand up for what he believed in. Hard to believe there was a time when the majority of the world vilified him and were against him. Now that is brave!

Muhammad Ali riding a bike Remembering The Greatest Muhammad Ali’s boxing career was actually launched by the theft of his red and white Schwinn bike. A 12-year-old Ali (then Cassius Clay) discovered the bike missing outside a movie theater. He told a policeman that he wanted to “whup” the guy who made off with it. The policeman, who trained boxers in the basement of the movie theater, suggested Ali learn to fight first. He was Sergeant Joe Martin, who remained Ali’s coach until after the 1960 Olympics.
