Any thoughts or experiences on making something like this look better? I was thinking along the line of stove blacking compound, but don't know if that would run in the rain. Maybe just a sharpie? IMG_0698 by Sooper 8, on Flickr

nice bike. Short of powder coat , paint. Wet and dry the burrs flat use fine paper to finish. Buy a satin black rattle can , roll masking tape into a cone spray paint into the cap and touch up areas . build in layers on big dinks until the paint is raised. Let the paint go hard and very fine wet and dry flat 1000 -1500 grit. Polish with tcut/ mer compond. Finish with wd40 boot polish mix. Voilà . Try it in a small bit first.

Use the masking tape cone as you would a quill pen. Dip it in the paint and apply to the deburred scratch. The paint is being ised as filler . This is for small scratches only.

This is just my opinion and personal taste, but I would not do more than clean up the calipers themselves. I would, however, clean up or replace all the rusted chrome bits; even what little I can see of the spring looks a bit rusted. I'd also replace the brake pad holders with something more attractive, and probably new Kool Stop or similar pads.
But that's just me.

Jem Your options are: 1. Give the SB to me so you do not have the worry. 2. Strip completely, wash in paraffin or something more PC, wash again in degreaser, wash again in very hot soapy water, dry. Clean up all chrome with a polishing mop, protect with a wax. use Halfords satin black on the bare metal. once dry (I leave it 24hrs) then use something like T cut which removes the overspray and brings the paint up to a close match for the anodizing. Protect with wax. Rebuild with a nice grease. The block holders polish up lovely and even my 40 year old blocks work great. Keep it stock. 3. Give the SB to me so you do not have the worry. 4. Once all stripped and cleaned, give all the anodized parts a bath in oven pride to strip the anodizing. Polish to a high mirror finish, then send of to get the parts re anodizing. last time I got some anodizing done it was £5 per part + postage, so £25 to bring back to as new. 5. Give the SB to me so you do not have the worry. 6. Search the bay for extortionate DA Black parts (Do not ask how I know) 7. Give the SB to me so you do not have the worry.

Steve! Great tutorial thank you very much for pics and details.
You weren't trying to hypnotise me there were you? I seemed to be getting a subliminal message but not sure what it was...
Good luck with the entry this year, not that you'll need luck.

If you need a hand with the DA bits or need any let me know. I owe you a favour after all. The Viking is still sitting in the garage.

Stevevw,
I arrived in Bakewell too late to see the "Best in Show" event at Eroica at the weekend, but I think that Scott spoke with your friend who presented the bike.
I heard a rumour on Sunday that a Viscount rider had suffered a rear wheel failure, and recall seeing someone in the pits with a 'pringled' rim with a black l/f hub. I hope this wasn't yours, but if it was, I hope your friend wasn't hurt and that you managed to retrieve the hub at least.
