Hi..I'm new to this board. I just picked up an aerospace pro silver and black, just like the one I had in the 70's.
This one is in good condition but needs some help before I can enjoy it. I want to replace the tires which I know 27" IRC, but I am not sure what width came on these originally. Does it make a difference? I was looking at some 27 x 1" wide Panaracer Paselas. is this a good choice?
I am also thinking I would like to keep the wheel hubs, but perhaps have new rims and spokes put on. Has anyone done this? have you gone to a 700c rim? any recommendations on who can do this?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Craig. Welcome to the forum! I believe there is a post all about this somewhere but I am on my phone at the moment which doesn't give me the function of searching for key words. I will have a dig around tonight & post the link.

These conversations on the forum have a fair bit about tyres (tires): lambertandviscount.online/thread/691/1974-viscount-aerospace-pro?page=2lambertandviscount.online/thread/1102/tyre-size-27-7-8But perhaps Soop has some others in mind? I think it's true that the Panaracer Paselas have a good reputation on the forum and with other cyclists as well. (Although the time I used them they seemed to wear out rather quickly, but perhaps that was because of the way I ride.) There is still quite a range of 27" (630mm) tires (tyres) available if you look for them, although the skinnier ones - 1 1/8" (28mm) and less - aren't as common as 27 x 1 1/4" (630x32). The tires (tyres) are still being made in this size in small numbers, but there is undoubtedly a bigger choice in 700c (622mm). There shouldn't be any problem in rebuilding a wheel with new rims on an old Viscount hub. The caliper brakes used on Viscount bikes usually have enough adjustment to allow for the extra 4mm drop required.

Spa Cycles in Harrogate are currently offering the 27x11/4 Schwalbe HS159 gumwall tyre for £11.50 each (plus postage). These are reasonably hard wearing and an economic alternative to the Paselas until you get to the point where your bike's only shortcoming is its ride quality. Bankrupt Bike Parts stock Rigida polished alloy 27 inch rims, currently offered at £24.99 (+p&p) per pair. I've laced an original Viscount hub into one of these to create a perfectly serviceable wheel. You'll need spokes that are about 294mm long.

Hi Craig, and welcome, Yes, you'll find that a number of folks here, me included, have rebuilt Viscount hubs into 27" and 700c. I used Arraya Aero 1 tubular rims, which I like for that bike. My other fully assembled Viscount has the OEM 27"ers, which I will eventually replace. I used the spoke calc sheet that I found through Sheldon Brown's wheel pages, spocalcand the lengths I got from this one spoke calculator were within 1 or 2mm, enough to ignore on a tubular or box type rim.
