Interesting to read this thread on CTC , where someone is after steel wheels for a restoration. forum.cyclinguk.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=28006I personally wouldn't go this far to create something 'period correct'. For the weight and stopping ability in the wet, and the potential for rusting, I just would not go for steel.

You mean you don't enjoy that 'will I or won't I stop before I hit that wall/car/pedestrian?' feeling you get when riding in light rain on chromed steel rims?

My 1st Viscount, the blue Gran Touring came with steel rims as did my yellow Craig's List Gran Touring. While I switched out the blue bikes for Weinman Concave alloys I've still got the original, very shiny/no rust steel wheels on the yellow. They're actually quite esthetic and for a limited mileage / neighborhood bike, the nostalga factor trumps the heavy weight. That being said, I would never look for a steel wheelset as a replacement.
