Anyone looking for a freewheel block? Evans ex-display clearance site is currently listing 5, 6 and 7-speed freewheels by Sunrace and Shimano, e.g. £6.00 for a 5-speed 14-28t block, £11.00 for 6-speed 14-28t and £9.00 for 7-speed 13-34t. Have it delivered to your local branch and pick up for no postage costs. Easier than stripping and rebuilding a sticky old one? Do the 6- and 7-speed blocks work in a frame that was originally fitted with a 5-speed block, or does the chain catch on the stays? I realise this is also a freewheel clearance question - see what I did there? Rob.

I think you will need to cold set the rear spacing to 126mm. Rear spacing as I understand it: 5 speed and Ultra 6 are spaced at 120 mm 6 and 7 speed (road) are spaced at 126 mm. I think 7 speed may have a bit more dish in the wheel. 7 speed (MTB) and 8, 9, 10 speed (road) are spaced at 130 mm 7, 8 and 9 speed (MTB) are spaced at 135 mm I cold set the rear spacing using threaded rod, nuts and washers to widen the spacing. I move it a little at a time and let it set (rest) between adjustments. Attached is a picture of my klunker frame being cold set prior to stripping. Cheers Jim
