Hi all, just looking for some advice on cleaning my frame. Do I use paint striper and sand paper. Do I get it sand blasted?
Any ideas on where I can get decals of viscount grand Prix etc.
Thanks for all your help on identifying my bike.

My preferred method is to use Zip-Strip paint remover; I have used it on about a dozen frames with great success. A gallon will do two or three frames. Zip-Strip uses methyl chloride (Chloromethane), which I have previously used on airplanes, so I am comfortable with it. I have tried other brands of consumer level methyl chloride strippers with less success (perhaps they are weaker?). You must follow the directions, especially on safety. when removing the stripper from the frame (it becomes a nasty sludge) keep it away from dogs, children, and the neighbors cat; it is nasty stuff, but it works. www.recochem.com/us/products/zip_strip_paint_finish_removers/zip_strip_premium_paint_finish_removerYou must be careful with media blasting as well. You can erode the metal, fill the tubes with dust and if using sand, it can cause silicosis. As for decals, I have always been happy with VeloCals www.velocals.com/Good Luck Jim Zip-Strip_Removers_Sell_Sheet_WEB.pdf (364.54 KB)

From Velocals, this rings a bell but I can't quite finger what this was for. A saddle? Anyway, good luck with restoration, for a Grand Prix, I hope someone has the decals. Decals are nice but to me, unless I were reselling the bike, perhaps not of utmost importance.

Some Viscount lugged frames were made in Italy. They're pretty rare, but they do exist. A similar sticker adorns the Viscount La Scala folding bike owned by Mrs S.

I have been trying to source the decals for the refurb but not having much luck. I can find front badge and viscount down tube decals but the grand Prix seems pretty impossible to find. Just wondering if anyone out there has ever tried to refurbish a grand Prix and did you find the decals for it?
I have tried the main Google search and have spoken to Lloyd's with no luck.
Maybe I'm just being too fussy...

VeloCals makes a Sebring set and they do customs. You might see if they would make a set with the Sebring script changed to Grand Prix. I know they are in the US, but that is what mail is for. www.velocals.com/You might also check with local decal/sticker makers. A making reasonable copy of the Grand Prix script is likely to be possible using available fonts. Good Luck! Jim

Thanks again for your time and input.
Will give them a call tomorrow, see what happens.
The pictures of you bike seem very close to what mine look's like except for the center pull brakes and the back derailer. By the look of it all the decals on yours are the same as mine. Shame mine are not as good condition as yours.
John.

Refurb under way, been looking to source chain ring and crank set, any ideas where to look other than the usual eBay etc? It might be worth checking out bike jumbles? I have spent some miserable hours at them but have also found bits and pieces at very reasonable prices and gone home very happy. The other thing to do, is search under 'spares and repairs' for whole bikes from that era. You will have more chance of finding a bike with the parts on, for less than the part itself. Gumtree has a couple of bikes at the moment that I know has parts worth far in excess of their value. Only trouble is they are down in London.

Thanks, with me living in northern Ireland I find jumbles are non existent in my part of the woods, and not much comes up here on Gumtree etc. Will keep a look out thanks for your reply.
